No, I meant you can't just autopilot the loop unless you have a way to hold down the dpad button which is significantly more difficult than using the penny trick. I'm sure there's a way to keep up on the dpad held down (put a rock on it? lol) but for now I've just been holding it to hatch my eggs.

That must be lucky for you, mine have NEVER made me an elemental stone. Unless I have the wrong guys. I have hex maniacs and punk chicks that can "make some goods", are those the ones? they have only ever made secret base items for me.

Really bears repeating, not even 24h into this purchase of OR and the difference between it and Y is astounding. The colors are so much more vibrant. Makes it feel like XY was the beta test lol. Music is also that old good Hoenn melody/tempo but beautifully updated. Sun/Moon better be at least this good from a baseline!

You can use the penny trick in ORAS. I personally don't like it, as you go through a couple sand pits that slow you down. And yeah, you've got the wrong trainer types. You need pokemaniacs, rangers, or ninja boys. The option is pick up stones.

Oooh, thanks. I'll have to change them up. That will make getting stones so easy.

I started with OR and only went back for X cuz I wanted Xerneas, and it was really jolting how underdeveloped the game felt compared to ORAS. So yes ORAS > XY in plenty of ways.

I can't help but feel that XY were completely developed around making the Pokemon experience as user-friendly as possible for the people who would be picking up the series for the first time. It really seems to me that the game was meant to be a starting point for a new generation of Pokemon players who might have a 3DS but not any of the other consoles that Pokemon games have appeared on. This was really apparent by a lot of factors - the game's comparatively short length, the simplicity of the puzzles included, and especially the player's interactions with the various NPCs of the game. The "rivals"/friends don't exert any sort of pressure for the player to be better, they just drag the player around everywhere. And the villains aren't villainous or menacing at all (apart from their leader), like the game was trying to show a more family-friendly facade than usual. But on the other hand, XY's story was a lot more adult in many ways than some of the other games. Tiny fairy coffins and Pokemon war PTSD are pretty hardcore.

I didn't play 3rd gen when it originally came out, only the Alpha Sapphire version, so I had no idea how big and confusing Hoenn was in comparison to XY (or even Kanto). It feels much more like an epic journey across a huge world. XY does seem vastly underdeveloped in relation to its predecessor, but I think Hoenn also has some bloat, especially in the water areas. I was finding myself not enjoying all the diving and navigating the many water routes that all looked pretty much identical and hardly had any difference in wild pokemon between them. Also, I know they only did this because they wanted every pokemon catchable in Gen 6, but the legendary bloat in ORAS is off the charts. It's kind of fun to hunt them, but it's also pretty annoying that you have to play both games once to be able to catch all of the legendaries (unless you trade for the ones from the game you don't have, but that seems fairly unrealistic to do legitimately).

Looking forward to Sun/Moon, I truly hope they can strike a balance between the sparsity of XY and the bloat of ORAS. I hope they keep the best elements of both games - the character customization and neat stylish elements of XY but also some of the complexity and spread of ORAS, plus the DexNav. From what we've seen, it looks like they'll even be improving on the formula in some ways but I will be somewhat disappointed if Sun/Moon feel as "user-friendly" and hand-holding as XY because I'm finding it quite annoying and I don't think it actually contributes to the game experience, even for new players. These games are all about discovery and relying on yourself and your Pokemon and XY took a lot of that away by putting your journey on rails toward objectives others discovered for you.

But man I really can't wait to catch all those new Pokemon. Working on a living dex for the first time ever has really been an eye-opening experience to how many awesome Pokemon I glossed over through the years. And I have a new favorite Pokemon, the cutest thing I've ever seen in my life, Pumpkaboo <3

Yeah, Hoenn going overboard with Surf and Dive is the main reason I didn't like them when I was younger. The other reason being the encounter rate felt really high. 4th gen is where my interest peaked because of the special/physical split and random online battling with PBR on Wii; I only got Ruby in 3rd gen and FireRed but I had my dad play that one. I played Y pretty close to release but I dropped it as soon as E4 was done because there was basically no postgame and I was still pretty heavily into FFXIV at the time. Only just picked it up again this week before transitioning right into OR.

The more laid back nature of XY is also reflected in its music. It has a kind of slower tempo (feels about 10% slower, and the sort of guitar-like sound it goes for doesn't make up for the slower pace) for things like battling that doesn't exactly feel unfitting but also doesn't get you hyped up as much as say Hoenn battle music. I think this fits XY thematically because the whole game is a little more relaxed in many ways (more leisurely like France I guess). Gym and E4 is the only times it really "gets serious" and even then it's not really much more lively of a tempo.

I liked parts of the RSE themes but ORAS puts less emphasis on GBAtrumpet sounds and more on the nice drumbeat and slightly synthy sounds. Feels more lively. I dunno, not a music expert. I feel a lot more hyped up when the music escalates with player expectations; in Pokemon my definitive example for this is what I think is the best Champion's theme - Cynthia from DPP. Champion+Red theme from HG/SS is also worth noting though.

Also talking about hand-holdy, while XY was definitely a little worse in that respect I don't remember the part after the first gym being "Hey, remember the old man on route 104? He has a boat to the 2nd gym!" about 4 times in rapid succession in 3rd gen.

e: If I have one complaint about ORAS it's the seemingly weird "zone" breakups in some areas, like Slateport's outdoor market. I imagine it's because they're packing more "density" into each area rather than having the XY situation of a huge screen with basically nothing going on in it, but it's a little weird sometimes.

I was honestly bored to tears with X and Y but ORAS kept me thoroughly entertained the entire time and I loved all the new mechanics and nostalgia. But then again I was always a fan of Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald unlike most people who hated them I guess

I think largely because X/Y was designed to be open-ended for later expansion via DLC (lots of obvious hints even down to the coding) that they never followed through with and compared to the games that just came before it, they went back to the "simple" straight forward nature similar to pokemon R/G/Y/B etc. ORAS refined some aspects but also got rid of some aspects (character customization for obvious reasons) and it was in a prior established region so you pretty much relived something you probably played back in the day compred to Kalos, which is a new region they could have done a lot more with.

Sun & Moon will probably feel like X/Y unless they do a lot more with the game. Some of the new features are nice from what we heard but we've yet to have a newer pokemon game allowing us into previous regions for example.

I think it would be really neat to be able to revisit Kanto/Johto after Alola is done. Because it would be a perfect celebration of the 20th anniversary and allow us to revisit a region we have not been to in forever. Would be pretty boss to have to fight Ash or Red or even Gary.

I have two extra Gamestop codes for Darkrai that expire on Wednesday. PM if you want them. First come first serve as long as you're an active poster.

I ran into two shiny Pokemon my first week into ORAS -- an Oddish and a Shuppet -- and nothing ever since.

I'm really hoping the lore of Z-moves is the legend of a boy who could meld his mind with his Greninja, with Ash and Greninja being the final boss.

Right after Gym 7 it sidetracks a ton, then for me had a good difficulty spike.

Quite the opposite. XYORAS is the easiest the series has ever been. You have a ton of advantages, not the least of which is extremely early access to Exp Share. Only gets complicated when/if you want to get into competitive battling.
