Would this be hard to pick up and play for someone who hasnt' played a pokemon game since blue/red/yellow?

Just playing the game is just as easy as before if not moreso. The only tricky part might be getting the new resistances and weaknesses straight in your head (I still need references sometimes).

However competitive meta is completely different than old RBY Mewtwo centric battling.

^ What throws me is Fairy's type interactions, remembering that Steel doesn't resist Dark and Ghost anymore, and remembering that Dark/Ghost doesn't have 0 weaknesses anymore because of Fairy.

Fairy was kind of wild. But Mawile just, for a lack of getting around this pun, chews through every damn thing when properly raised because of now being fairy, but it did open her up to shitty weaknesses lol.

I'm seriously not trying to sound like some kind of hipster but I liked Mawile before 6th gen, scrubs.

I had a mostly low tier doubles team in PBR (Wii, 4th gen) random online where I led most of the time with Mawile (@Sash, Iron Head / Sucker / Swords / Protect) and Hitmontop (@Liechi, Mach / Bullet / Fake / Endure, it makes sense in context) where, 90% of the time, my first 2 turns were almost autopilot because nobody paid any attention to Mawile on the first turn ever, leading to some very predictable responses. With how hyper-offensive things got in 5th and 6th I don't think I could do that again though

e: So while I can't bring over my 4th gen to 5th without getting myself a DSlite charger (probably just check a Gamestop this weekend), I can bring over my JPNblack stuff it turns out, so I'm happy (though I can't play the cart on the 3ds, only use it for transporter, so I need to use fatDS to move stuff lol). Nice for lazy dex boosting and some old legends. Gives me some trade fodder for the older 3rd/4th gen stuff.

e2: Just realized I've been calling White Black for like forever just because it has Zekrom. Was slightly important because it means I picked the "correct" game in OR to finish certain sets of legends (Reshiram, Tornadus).

So all the talk about Pokemon OR/AS in this thread caused me to go out and impulsively buy a 3DS and OR. On one hand, I was shocked I had to buy a charger for the 3DS, but on the other hand, considering how much Nintendo is dominating the hand-held market, I'm not surprised lol.

Anyway, for you knowledgeable folk out there, is there anything I should definitely do right away? Any online pokemon available I should go get? Stuff like that. When I eventually get my friend-code, I'll post it.

If you plan on being "serious" about Pokemon at all definitely get the $5/yr sub to PokeBank, and consider making a living dex. It's really the best way to get to know all the Pokemon...since there are such a massive amount of them. If you're playing catch-up through several gens like I am, it is definitely a very interesting exercise (but also very time consuming).

Friend code is on the top panel of the DS home menu screen under the little green smiley face box for friends, you should see a "card" for each friend + your own card and it will have your number on it.

Huh. I figured Z moves were just going to be a Mega move, kind of like 5th gen's gems but more drastic. Or like a Hyper Beam one time on demand. Unless the different variations within a type are just species specific or something, That trailer kind of makes it seem like that might not be the case though, or at least everyone might have some different looking variations (possibly just a phys/spec version of each type).

I think so, I know it was mostly done to prevent errors from trading pokemon from older games > newer games if the item happens to not exist (it happens some times) or due to changes with pokemon.
