You don't need to evolve it in Sun/Moon for credit, you just have to have physically owned the form at one point. Like if I put Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard in my bank all I have to do is put all 3 into Sun/Moon and I'll get credit for all 3. Then I can put them back in if I want. So if you have a "complete" living dex it only takes like a minute to transfer that to the next game.

Like if you have charizard and you want Charmander and charmeleon in sun/moon you either have to catch 2 charmander, and evolve 1, or caupture 1 charmander and evolve it in moon

But yeah it just requires alot of new games in exemple X/Y since you can have only 1 save

Once you get into postgame, Blissey secret bases make EXP a breeze (you'll be seeing level-up pop-ups more than you actually spend time fighting) so the only evos that become a hassle are like, time of day or stones or trade evo. And I guess happiness.

Eventually get a Talonflame with Flame Body (lower amount of steps needed for hatching, plus has Fly) to make things easier. Breeding times take longer if the 2 involved have the same OT or are different species (like, Charmander and Charmander is same, Charmander/Charizard or Charmander/Ditto is not the same so it takes a little longer). I don't recall the exact amount of steps but it's just random chance every (say) 200 steps. The daycare man will turn around when he has an egg to give you. When you have 5 eggs (assuming you want to breed for a lot; if not stop at 1-2 obviously) you can either bike back and forth on the route, or once you can go to Battle Resort there's a spot where you can just hold up or left or something and you'll just autoloop. Repeat until eggs hatch.

Female determines the species you get when you breed; if Ditto is involved you just get the non-Ditto's baby. There's a whole lotta other shit about how passing IVs and abilities and egg moves works that I'm not entirely up to date on (my knowledge is basically bits and pieces beyond 4th gen) but none of that is too important for just dex progress.

You've probably noticed the small indents in walls, really wide bushes, or stand alone trees with vines hanging down. Those can be secret bases. If someone has a base there, the indent will become a general tunnel entrance, the bush will have a hole in front, and the tree gets a ladder (vine ladder? something). Really noticeable in any case. You can also pull up a list of other people's bases that are in your game, but it will only tell you the route it's on, not specific location.

Other people can visit your base whenever, but if you're talking about getting them to stay in your base, then you need to go to their base and choose to have them be your pal/friend.

Connect to the internet using the PSS. First 30 that register as passers by on the system when you log on will leave their secret base on your world, with the exception that no one will ever replace your base. You can find where all the secret bases on your cart currently are through the secret base tab on your map app.

Inside the secret base will be the person and they will have a team of Pokemon you can battle based on what they had when they made their secret base and registered it. Normally Secret Base battles are locked at level 50, but there's a decoration you turn on to lift the cap. If they have 3 Blisseys and you uncap the fight, you get a ton of XP. You can manually load Blissey bases onto your cart through scanning QR codes. After you battle them, also register them as a "pal" for your own base. They leave their base and come to yours. You can battle them again at your base once per day. You can have 5 pals at your base, so that's 15 uncapped Blisseys. With XP share, that's enough to power level a whole team to 50 easily (where most battling is capped) by bringing one fighter and 5 bricks to the fight.

so yes you can breed charmander to no end, but still need to do another game to get Squirtle then another for Bulbasaur, same for Moltres/Zapdos/Articuno

That's assuming you want to do all the work yourself, my roomate just finished his Living Dex with the Arceus event, it took him about 3-4 months doing most of the work himself, and then trading for the rest.

Lot of confusion here so let me help you clear it up.

You do not have to play XY more than once, because you can trade for the other starter pokemon. They are not very rare through Wonder Trade or even on GTS. Once you get farther along in your Pokemon collection, you can probably just specify which ones you still need here and trade with some of us. [edit] forgot about the legendary birds, I guess if you can't get them anywhere else you'll have to play it a few times. Luckily it's a much shorter game than ORAS

You DO have to play Ruby once and Sapphire once, and then import all the legendaries you caught from both games to ONE of those games to finish catching all of the legendaries (since some require you to have both game-exclusive legendaries in your party before you can catch others).

For a living dex, get as many pokemon as you can from whichever game(s) you're playing and put them in the Pokebank. Then, hunt the rest down one by one either through trading, breeding or finding them in your game if you missed em. XY have a lot that can only be found in hordes, and ORAS have a lot that can only be found on mirage islands, meaning you have to wait to collect them all. Once your living dex is complete, all you'll have to do in Sun/Moon once you get the National Pokedex (assuming they have one) is import every box of Pokemon from your PokeBank into your Sun/Moon game. You can do a box at a time in Pokebank by pressing Start button a couple times, it changes the cursor color to green which means "select all" so you can move a whole box at once from your bank to your game. This way, you do not have to get every pokemon in every game, you just have to get every pokemon across all games and then take some time importing the Bank boxes to the games you want a full Pokedex in.

Secret bases: I hate finding them, it's a pain. Luckily, Blissey secret base leveling can be done through QR codes. Here they are: http://i.imgur.com/aF02xUQ.jpg

Just go to your secret base and click the option for scanning QR codes and it'll ask you to take a picture of it. Import all those on the pictures and all 6 secret bases in Secret Meadow and Secret Shore will be occupied by Blissey trainers. Notably, only the leader of the secret base will have Blissey battles, the other trainers at their base will do triple battles with pokemon that aren't Blissey. Personally, I move everything I have to evolve for my 'dex over to ORAS from XY and just blissey level them, so easy

@Katlan: you get handed a togepi egg in Lavaridge Town by an NPC in ORAS if you wanna do it that way. After work I can make a few gastlys and hand them out or catch you a haunter and trade it to you if you would rather have a gengar.

I have shittons of spare Ghastly with 5 IVs/timid, but you'll need to trade it again at some point to get Gengar.
