A lot goes into breeding. My strategy has just been using a Ditto with the best IVs possible (I managed to luck into a perfect one awhile back) and a Destiny Knot with whatever you're trying to breed. If you're lucky, it won't take long to get one that has better IVs than the initial parent, so you switch that one in and keep going. The better the IVs are on both parents (especially with a Destiny Knot) the better your odds of getting one with a good or perfect spread. If the non-Ditto Pokémon has one specific IV you're after and you don't care about Nature, you can also give it a specific power item to lock in that one IV for the egg.

Can I breed a ditto with a ditto to get a better ditto? I didn't think that worked. So its really just trying to catch a good ditto in the wild and hope RNG favors you?

Pretty much. Go out and catch every 3-star one you can find and hope that one of them ends up having 4 or 5IVs. GTS also has a lot of them up for grabs.

4IV Dittos aren't too bad to get and make a pretty decent starting point for IV breeding. My methodology basically revolves around breeding whatever with a 4IV Ditto, continually upgrading the non-Ditto parent as it gets more of the maxed IVs. Switch out with another 4IV Ditto with different desired IVs as needed.

I spent most of 4 days on the Ditto mirage island in ORAS once I found it and encountered over 300 Dittos, caught about 40 3-star Dittos, 5 of which were 4IV. Also got one shiny but it had bad IVs and no Imposter Bring a shit-ton of Quick and Repeat Balls. I used a Mega Mawile as my catcher with Play Rough (never used it), Iron Head, False Swipe, and Return. As long as you don't let them transform into your Mega you're golden. Use PP and HP O-powers as needed so you don't have to leave for those reasons. You could probably use like Eviolite Scyther or a number of other False Swipe users as your catcher of choice, I just picked Mawile because I was too lazy to find another catcher.

If you WT a lot you can sometimes get some decent breedjects of 4-5IV mons with wrong abilities or natures (or just the wrong maxed IVs). These are pretty nice to have if you happen to want that mon or can use it as a male for the female of a species you DO want. Like I ended up with a 5IV Xatu; I could use that towards breeding a good Togepi, Fletchling, etc.

So like I have a 5IV Sylveon (male) that I want to breed to use for its other evolutions. So I give the Sylveon (male) a Destiny Knot and breed it with a 4IV ditto? Is that the basic gist of it? The destiny knot will choose the parent who inherents the IV's? and since its a male it will pass down its abilities?

Knot can go on either parent and it'll pull 5 random IVs from the 12 total on both parents, and inherit those 5 and randomly generate the remainders. There's no guarantee it picks different IVs though; if it picks say the maxed SpA on both parents then you don't get a "reroll" for another stat. Without knot it just inherits 3 total out of that 12. 5IV with 4IVDitto is pretty solid though; aiming for 6IVs is torture but if you settle for 5IV (non-maxed in your non-attacking stat, or the defense stat of choice on a mixed attacker) it's a lot less painful.

Ability inheritance is never guaranteed and I'm not familiar with the exact percentages. But if you're trying to pass down hidden ability (Anticipation Eevee / Pixilate Sylveon) then it has to be (either gender with Ditto) or (Female with same species?). Eevee having its gender ratio being what it is you're probably looking at HAmale+Ditto.

The other parent not holding the knot should ideally be holding an Everstone if it's the nature you want, unless you want to roll the dice on that front. You can have it hold a Power item to force one specific IV to be inherited but it does count as one of the 5 inherited by Knot.

e: holyfuck got my first 6IV. Downer is that it's a Female Torchic with Blaze. Though I guess I could breed it with 5IV males for a 6IV male, then breed that with a 4IV female with Speed Boost for slightly better odds of 6IV with Speed Boost.

I have breedject Larvitar, Froakie, Honedge, Gible, Elekid, and Fletchlings as well. Mostly 4IVs since I tended to accept 5IVs. Not sure if I have you friended yet but that's an easy fix. Could probably throw a couple 3IV Dittos that cover all 6 stats as well; not quite as good as 4IV but I have like 25 of these suckers.

god damn managed to get my Shiny Skorupi after a few hundred or so eggs, but I'm slightly sad because it's only a 3IV after I got dozens of 5IV ones. HP/ATK/SpD is fine, but would have preferred SPE to SPD

No problem. Beats having to start from scratch, especially in XY. I don't want to live in a world without DexNav. Though for what it's worth XY does have the small benefit that babies (non-breeders like Pichu and the like) will have 3 maxed IVs like legendaries, because I guess they tied the auto-3IV to the no-egg group rather than legends specifically (as they did in ORAS).

Finally got Elekid island, never saw it before today. Only one with 3 star potential so far but I've at least gotten a bunch of Electirizers.

Agreed that Dexnav is the best QoL addition to Pokémon, hands down. Can't imagine playing without it now.
