Guess I'm starting with sun. I have the amazon steelbook so getting both, but I wanted to start with moon. In the end it doesn't matter too much since trading between BG and GTS and everything

Jealous. I wanted to get the Steelbook but they were all sold out by the time I decided to just pre-order. I waited hoping there would be bonuses depending where you bought it like with ORAS. I had to go through Gamestop and get each as a single. They were even out of their "buy both get 100 Pokeballs" thing.

Anywho, going Sun main:

Will probably drop Oricoro**, Kommo'O, or Silvally for Solgaleo eventually.

Wanted to use different stuff. Zygare 10% might be switched over to my Sun play through as I forgot about him.

They didn't have shiny versions, but shiny mons would be Decidueye and Lycanroc(both) with a maybe for Oricorio and Salazzle.

Is it possible to get a shiny starter to start? I don't think so, but wasn't definite on the answer. I'm thinking it must be bred.

You can soft reset for starters but it will be the base rate so could take quite a while. Breeding one later would be faster assuming they have the shiny charm and masuda method again. No reason to think they won't though.

So we know how Hyper Training works now: there's regular (max one stat) and gold (max all stats) versions of bottle caps. Gold are very limited. You trade the old red/green/blue/yellow shards for regulars somewhere. What's notable is they do not actually change your IVs, they just change the stat(s) of choice as if they had a 31 IV. So Hidden Power no longer has to sacrifice an IV here or there for type of choice.

I guess this is a reason there's 2 color markings now; you might want to track which are "real" 31 IVs and which are "fake".

Burn's damage per tick is halved now (same amount Leftovers recovers, 1/16). So good for Guts users and makes it slightly less fatal to be burned by Wisp/Scald/whatever if you don't attack physically.

It seems like there's a regular daycare but there's also a nursery where you don't gain EXP, only lay eggs. There's an infinite "bike" route via the start menu from anywhere pretty much.

Maybe I'll give it a few tries before giving up. Would love a shiny Rowlett. I honestly thought it wasn't possible because of how starters work.

I like the nursery idea. Always hated the auto learning of skills in the daycare. Bike loop is great, too. ORAS daycare route was kinda cramped and I found myself constantly riding into npcs trying to hatch stuff.

There's an infinite loop in the battle resort, because of how the camera changes you can keep holding "up" at certain places and make an infinte loop. A starting point is the kind of "L" corner to the right of the daycare kid.

e: New mechanics discovery: Mega Evolution now recalculates speed/priority on the same turn you go Mega. So things like Gallade who jump up in speed on Mega will get the increased speed on the same turn they Mega. Mega Banette will get Prankster on the same turn it megas, and conversely Mega Sableye "loses" Prankster on the turn it megas.

Can you max a Pokemon by Hyper Training in all six IVs?

Seems like it. It'll just cost you (up to) 6 bottle caps to do it. If shards aren't annoying to farm, this will severely cut down on time spent breeding things for competitive since now all you need is nature, ability, egg moves (if needed), and any optional tweaks for Hidden Power or 0 speed for Trick Room.

The downside is the need to figure out how we're EV training this time around. Super Training is gone as are traditional Horde battles. There is a new mechanic that is sort of horde-like (and also the method to chaining for IVs/shiny/HAs it seems) where

wild pokemon can call for backup; it's 2v1 at any given time. Knock them out back and forth until desired chains reached I guess. There's an item that ups the call for help rate

but it doesn't seem as ideal as gen6 hordes.

There's a system in Poke Pelago where you can basically EV train a whole box at once, but at the moment it seems pretty slow. Some say the rate is upgradeable though and it does run while the 3DS is off.

Assuming shards aren't super rare, seems like a decent alternative to getting golds. Esp. for legendaries where there are already 3 maxed.
