All the extra animations are still there if you level affection in Refresh. But you have to level it to a certain point (4 or 5 hearts I guess?) before it starts doing that stuff, in my experience. I like the extra animations so I make an effort to level affection on all the pokemon I really like XD

[edit] possibly unfortunately for you, Refresh is worked into the actual battle system now. If your pokemon gets a bad status effect during battle, you can clean it up with Refresh after battle (in fact, you are pretty much expected to) rather than having to use an item to remove the status now. The downside to that for people who don't want to level their pokemon's affection level being that removing the status with Refresh also gives you points toward the next level of affection, so do it enough times post-battle and your pokemon will eventually be annoying you with extra animations.

The "lag" is a very minor annoyance. The boosted EXP you get per battle makes up for it. I always try to max the affection of each Pokemon just for the EXP boost, even though it's a minor boost.

I think I got the worst Rowlet possible. This little bugger can't even go one on one with the lv8 Grimer at lv11. I barely won the fight using all 4 mons I had (the others were lv6). Then, at lv12, he couldn't even stand against Magnemite lv9. I lost. LOST. I haven't lost a battle in... well since Red. They weren't even his weakness.

I totally didn't realize you needed to hit a button to bring up the save menu. I'm so use to the bottom screen always displaying that crap. I was in the theater playing and the movie was starting. I thought I wasn't far enough yet and got really annoyed that I still couldn't save and just turned it off figuring "well maybe I'll get lucky next start" for a shiny. I was just catching mons for the first time right after Kukui shows you how. So I started anew... and got this little shit.

If I restart, can I claim another Munchlax? I already did the gift and received it in game. I'm thinking not? I'm not sure how it figures gift eligibility. Oh, and I already transferred my Greninja... meh.

If you restart you can almost certainly get both Greninja and Munchlax again. Generally Mystery Gifts (at least ones that aren't a unique one-time code) are a once-per-file thing, not once-per-copy-of-game.

Rowlet is a little boned very early on but I don't feel it lasts for that long. I hinged a little on Alola Meowth despite its bad Attack because it's fast and has Bite+Fake Out. Other than those 2 and the Munchlax I haven't established much of a team yet, though I will probably bump Pichu into the team. Just past first trial.

Also RefreshAmie's boosted EXP I think is as early as 1 heart filled which I think only triggers the "butt-wiggle" animation, unless that's 2 hearts. Affection builds super fast since no stupid minigames.

The Rotomdex's ability to nail down which specific patches of grass have which pokemon is kind of... it. SOS battles (mechanic where wounded pokemon call for help) is this game's way of chaining, and high chains can net up to 4 maxed IVs and chance of Hidden Ability. No proper DexNav equivalent.

I still haven't left first island, been going pretty slow even though I want to get pelago going asap.

That's unfortunate the whole calling for help thing would be nice if it was more reliable, since it doesn't always work.

The marts will start selling a consumable that lasts the whole battle called Adrenaline Orb which greatly boosts the SOS rate. It's the key to high chains.

Mystery Gift via Internet from the game start menu. Then a dude will be on the left in pokemon centers. This is also where you claim demo bonuses (make sure to go into demo and send them to the game).

Also when you get your bag from your box in the beginning of the game, if you go back to sleep instead of going outside with Kukui you'll see a cutscene with Meowth giving you an awakening.

So apparently Kadabra is bugged, so when he evolves at 16, he doesn't learn Confusion, and apparently won't learn Psybeam either? If so he's kinda useless.

I've been using my Rowlett mostly (he's on his 2nd evolve, level 22), and a Pichu (working on his happiness, he's 17) plus a Slowpoke, a Kadabra wasting space, and a Braviary pre-evolve I named Freedom.

Apparently the reason Kadabra doesn't learn Confusion is because Kinesis takes priority on evolving since GameFreak changed the way level 0 moves are learned. Some people have gotten Psybeam at 21 though while others claim to have not so that's still a mystery. Supposedly if you level up a pokemon at Festival Plaza using the Rare Meals or w/e it won't learn any moves for that level so just to be safe I would avoid those.

Can't do a single thing in this game without a cutscene popping up. It feels like I'm playing a kojima game at times.
