Man that is nuts. Like I said, I literally do this all the time. If it was me, I'd complain to corporate. Spoiled is four more examples of me buying open box and receiving the cpu/mb discount. You are owed that $20 and now then some for being treated rudely and the store not following their own rules. Go after them.

Start with email found here. This way you have a paper trail. If they do not reply, contact the local store and ask for the store manager. If they will do nothing, ask for corporate's phone number. This may seem extreme over $20, but I'm a person of principle and you deserve that money and also to be compensated for your wasted time trying to right their wrong. The only bad experience I've ever had at Micro Center was ironically my very first purchase (3570k+mb). I forget what happened but they didn't charge correctly. After a little runaround they sent me a pc speaker set that was worth more than the $ of the screw up.

Pricewatch is also a good site for components and gauging build costs.

Though I just built a machine going through Fry's and Newegg.

Got a i5 6600 @200 on a Fry's daily promo. Coupled it with a Gigabyte H170 @ 50, because I didnt plan to overclock but the bios allows for it.

    Grabbed 16GB (8x2) 2133 DDR4 for 57. Case was 30 and the SSD (120Gb) was 40.

The PSU (750W), GPU (960 Gtx 4(really 3) GB), and 1TB Hdd were taken from old computer.

Pretty happy with the end result. Also, depending on location Newegg's delivery service ontrac is ridiculously fast.

To get back on track, get in contact with corporate you'd be surprised what they will do to accommodate you.

Especially, when you explain the situation, the stores response, and your feelings regarding it.

Still waiting on a response from the email.

Edit: Got an email saying my message got forwarded to the manager. Tomorrow I plan on building my desktop. Wish me luck :<

Tyven, assuming you're running 8GB RAM, your setup is fine aside from the video card. You could drop the PS4 money entirely on a video card and call it a day, and you'd end up with a pretty nice setup.

    Here's a Radeon R9 390 that should out-pace a GTX 970 and is on sale for $300 right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125792

Kalmado is the deal finder though, maybe he could find something better yet.

The i5-2500K is a Sandy Bridge era CPU and is still very serviceable. Tokitoki is running The Division on my old i7-2600K and it's fine (i5 is essentially the same CPU as the i7 when it comes to gaming). The R9 390 is a huge step up over the GTX 570 and you're not going to find a CPU/GPU pair you could buy for less than $400 that would provide nearly the same boost in FPS.

Call it a day with a 390. My PS4 is now strictly a Netflix box.

AMD so far has shown better benches and what not in DX12. Also, AMD definitely gives you more bang for your buck.

AMD offers more for the money in the mid-range than nVidia right now. AMD CPU's haven't been competitive for a long time, but their video cards still are.

Those are very basic needs. I'd almost say, "why even do a custom build?"...

    That being said... http://pcpartpicker.com/p/yQnBK8

I didn't include an optical drive, case, or power supply, so you would want to add those based on the user's preference of case and need. I did not include a video card because your needs didn't include gaming or graphics work, so the integrated GPU should be plenty. If you want to fill out the budget a little more, you could swap the i3 CPU with an i5 6400/6500/6600 for a little more cash and go quad-core.

I'd go with the I5 anyways, especially if he's dealing with Access or Excel.

I agree actually. The i5 is a much more stout CPU, but the i3 would get the job done under a strict budget.
