I think they post a lot of intellectually dishonest things, and foster a very hateful culture within feminism. Outside of that I could take it or leave it, I don't much hear or read about the site unless it does something absurd and random youtubers I follow make a note of it.

I realize we're talking numbers with like, eight zeroes behind it, but it's a weird thought:

100m kills the company
They're fine to throw 50m +X% into an account that sits until the end of the appeal.

How does that not hamstring the company? Admittedly, I don't know jack shit about law, but does the horrible, sarcastic defense of the initial result come into effect at all? The man said he'd leak a celebrity sex tape of someone age 5 and up. How does that not crucify them?

Jezebel was the arm that said hosting Fappening pics was horribad and should be punished. Fuck 'em, get your testimony straight. Celeb nudes are either okay or they're not. You don't get to pick what's most convenient to look good.

There is some precedent that better portions of Gawker could survive the umbrella's dissolution.
Consumerist is still around, and I believe it's doing okay. Fleshbot is too, though I dunno about it's quality.

I doubt I'd start reading Kotaku ever again, VG247 wins these days.
But the main reason I dropped io9 was the Gawker association, and the fucking 2011 redesign. If it came back independent and with some quality, I'd consider reading it again.

The appeal could also significantly reduce the settlement. So there's no reason to not appeal. I think that's actually a very plausible outcome of the appeal.

Honestly in Gawker's situation thats the best they can do. They're in the wrong (Ignoring a judge's order on top of all that), though I'm surprised they didn't try to paint Hogan as a sue happy ex-wrestler who's in a bad position since he tried to sue the radio host who got the video for copyright violations.

Edit: Possible? No that number is definitely going to inflate by quite a bit.

The number may go up initially, but he obviously got a very favorable jury in his home state. I highly doubt the amount that ultimately gets paid is more than 50 million. I think that could even be a stretch. I'm not sure there's precedent for those kinds of damages.

Not to mention Hulk Hogan's career is over and it wasn't Gawker's fault. I don't know what monetary compensation to place on it but it damn hell wouldn't be $115 million.

I'm sure $10 Million would've gotten the point across and not forced the Gawker Media staff to drown their weekend in a lot of alcohol.

The Gawker heads are pretty fucktarded too. During the trial, they were asked if any sort of porn type stuff would or should be off-limits and the CEOs were like "mabye child porn. Like... if the child was under 4 or 5. But older we'd write about it"

I think the 115$ million settlement is good because it shoves down internet bloggers/"journalists" throat to not fuck around with shit and to mabye think before they spew out garbage. It would be just grand if Buzzfeed posted something stupid and got sued to the center of the sun.

Personally, I was still struggling with the fact that we're living in a time where a "news" website can post a video of an individual having sex for everyone in the world to see and everyone's just okay with that (except the individual in question, obviously). It's completely absurd that we've fallen this far in morals and fucks given about others' privacy. "Oh, a famous person's having sex? Hot damn, I gotta see that"
