PC Build Advice/Review II: 5090 or Bust.

[Cyn]

I think you're severely underestimating how much it takes to do something like playing a FPS in 4K and expecting 120+FPS with ray tracing on. Mind you, you'd need a $1,500+ monitor to do that, but people with monitors that nice aren't balking at the price of the 3080 or 3090.

[Cream Soda]

Monitors are so far behind at this point I'm honestly just considering getting a 200 dollar 4k tv; to replace one of my 1080p monitors (2 monitor set up; or hell may even just wall mount it behind my computer desk for a 3 monitor set up) and check in on how 4k monitors are doing in another year or two

[Krandor]

According to Nvidia on reddit, 6 AM PST is the launch time for the 3080

[Yabby]

They post a day? Is that tomorrow? COM"ON MAN!

I just got a nice bonus, so now the wife can't bitch at me for wanting to treat myself.

Edit: Nvm, i see the date above and i'm dumb.

[Weltall]

3090 is a week later on the 24th I believe.

I very rarely go for the top tier cards. Most of the money you are spending is just to say you have one, when you rarely use that kind of power to justify the price. A year later there is always a card that will beat it.

[Andalusian girls]

looks like finally worth upgrading from the ol 1080ti

[Prothescar]

Mentally preparing myself to not get one and be stuck with a 1060 in the new ryzen rig til next year

Love those cuda cores. A big chunk of these cards are used in the realm of DSP (image/terrain processing) and IA since the spartan xilinx are pretty fucking expensive. The cards are great for small/prototype projects. Say whatever the fuck you want about nvidia, but their support is phenomenal for devs, absolutely outstanding. Can't say enough good things about 'em.

I have a bunch of 1070s MSI and EVGA and have been running flawlessly nonstop for more than 2 years.

Any hot leads on good prices for monitors? I'm looking at this one: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Czr...story_days=730 but I'm open to something similar if there's a cheaper brand that doesn't suck. It will be used as a single display running on a 3080.

[Prothescar]

I've got one of these and it has been phenomenal. slightly less refresh rate (it's listed as 100Hz but it is for all intents and purposes 120 as it has a free toggle on OC in the OSD for 120Hz) but the dedicated Gsync module is worth it imo. I've had bad times with Freesync.

Best Buy has landing pages (and notify links) up for the 30 series cards: 3070, 3080, 3090

It's being reported that the embargo for the FE cards lifts 3 days prior to launch while the partner cards are day of.

Nvidia had their Editor's Tech Day that went into more detail of the Ampere architecture. I didn't read these yet: Link 1, Link 2, Link 3.

[Prothescar]

New rig's ready to go for Ampere. RGB is a massive pain in the ass prob just gonna turn it all off. Ended up going with:

Case: Coolermaster Masterbox TD500 Mesh
Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus X570 Pro Wifi
CPU: 3900X (4.4GHz all core @ 1.36v, best cores on each CCX @ 4.5~4.6)
RAM: 32GB 3600MHz Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB (Uplifted to 3800MHz to match 1900IF OC)
Storage: 2x 2TB Sabrent Rocket Q 4.0, 1x 1TB Samsung 860 EVO

What I'd do differently: The motherboard and the RAM kit. RGB Fusion does not work, can not control any of the lighting at all. Might have to fuck around with how theyre connected to the motherboard or something. RAM kit is slow. Timings are very bad, did not realize it was CL18 until after. Would go with some Trident Z or something for tighter, more malleable timings. Overall all set for Ampere though, will see if I make any further adjustments to this in the next couple weeks. The 1060 i had laying around being held up by the anti-sag bracket meant for the 3090 is just as hilarious irl as it is in the picture.

[Corrderio]

So odd question but are there any good cases that don't have shit for a handle?

[Prothescar]

LAN oriented cases, most matx or itx cases

[Krandor]

https://graphicscardhub.com/lan-party-case/

I've used an older version of the Corsair HAF on that list before, I was a fan.

[Corrderio]

Thanks. Was thinking of building a PC in spring of next year and I prefer cases with a handle just because it makes it easier to move around

[Prothescar]

A couple of MSI 3080 and 3090 models went up for preorder on Amazon today. Pissed I missed them. Hopefully it was an error and not an indication that we're going to be scattershotted with random ass listings from now til the 17th.

[Jamison]

Last preorders I saw ended up being refunded after Nvidia got involved.

[Nitsuki]

Soooooo gonna take the shot at camping best buy since it’s the only store i have available to get me a 3080. Looks like they have the founders, gigabyte, and msi models, so not sure which one to try. I was told to call today to see how they’re gonna handle the stock tomorrow.
