Is there still money to be made in hardcore crypto mining?
With a big enough farm there is
Don't expect much if any of you are going after an Evga card tomorrow. Evga's site is botted even outside of a hot new release.
Looks like the ASUS ROG STRIX is the fastest clocked 3080, so far:

If performance tests are truly only 7-10% difference between the 3080/3090, I may hold out for the leaked 3080 with 20GB VRAM. November was the suggested timeframe. Should know more in the next few days.
3080 10gb is a hard sell to me. I don't think it will hold resale value well with RDNA2 coming and leaked 16/20gb 3070/3080.
It also depends on the price spike, if those rumored 16/20gb has a price a lot closer to a current 3090... imo worth going for the 10gb with how much i’d like to spend.
20GB prob be 999msrp calling it now
Given the memory size of the new consoles I very sincerely doubt the average person will actually need 16 or 20 GBs of VRAM at any point in the next few years.
Just a scheme to bait people into paying more money so they can feel good about themselves when the system allocates a bunch of VRAM that never actually gets used
yea big vram budgets are 100% useless for anyone who isnt making big 3d project or doing data crunching work and has always been a gimmick to try to make a card look like it's worth more. AMD has been riding the "pump the VRAM to increase perceived value" train for years. it's kind of like system memory, people who have 32GB and swear they need it just because they see windows allocating all of it when in reality most of it will never actually be filled.
That said 12GB would have been pretty comfortable as a nice little safety net on the standard 3080
Agreed considering the 2080Ti is closer to that. I think with 10 i’ll be fine, i don’t think any of my current or upcoming games considering consoles will utilize all of that vram.
The only time I can really recall hitting a hard wall in VRAM size while gaming was modding the shit out of Skyrim with an R9 290.
From what we've seen the larger VRAM sizes will likely come into play more for 8k (or VR). Unless there are newer features/etc that'll push Ray Tracing use past 10GB.
I'd agree that it's probably a bit beyond what most people will want or need for this generation, but there'll likely be some that actually put it to use.
8k is only going to be viable in the foreseeable future with the use of DLSS or some other form of AI upscaling.
Which means less VRAM usage due to lower rendering resolution
I'm not that concerned with 10GB of memory affected performance. I'm more concerned with the perception of it affecting performance on the used the market. Big number good, small number bad. I'd like to keep the low cost upgrade train going. Even as bad as the price/perf cost of the 2080ti people were buying ftw3s on ebay for 1300-1400$ when the announcement for end of production was made (July/Aug ?). I don't know if the 3080 will hold its value.
So evga is restocking this whole week. I managed to get to the cart but it went 0 quantity.![]()
Waiting on TUF or Strix here, otherwise I'll wait for the 20gb or roll 3090.
Looks like a second ultrawide or a superultrawide is in my not too distant future.
Evga tweeted they’ll be manually checking all the orders and canceling bot orders. At this point i don’t mind, but evga was one of my picks.
