I just cannot bring myself to go AMD GPU. They are going to need at least 2 generations of quality reviews/drivers/etc before I switch.
This. Nvidia never failed me, but the one time i switched to Radeon (9800XT, $550 gpu back in early 2000s) i was getting artifacting on FFXI 1 year later. I downgraded to a $200 nvidia gpu due to cash flow constraints and it performed better. Add to the fact that Radeon official drivers were trash and i had to get some guru3D custom drivers every time and i said fuck those GPUs since.
I actually had the opposite problem with XI where XI had problems with Optimus switching back when internal+external GPU combos first started coming out and my AMDs card never had a problem on XI.
i want to believe but ye AMD has been occasionally shit re software even when their hardware was up to snuff, just don't have the same base of trust as with Nvidia. that said their architecture powering both next-gen consoles is gonna give them a whole lotta revenue and a whole lotta incentive to be better so we'll see.
i bought amd gpu on last purchase (rx580) and regretted it almost immediately. been nothing but problems including this weird latency audio out of sync on youtube if I alt tabbed. i had to get some virtual hardware audio program to work around it.
Yeah I'm thinking I'll wait for more 3070s to come in stock. Hell I already feel like that's way too much to spend on a GPU for FFXIV, but I also don't want to buy her an older card that'll be outdated soon. Plus it'll give her options for more games. If we're stuck inside for a few more months, might as well have good games to play on decent hardware amirite?

Honestly the 3070 is such a step up that it's not a bad decision if you have anything other than a 2000 series card

The embargo for the 6800s dropped at the top of the hour.
The gist is that they go blow for blow with Nvidia in rasterization but ray tracing performance is lagging behind substantially.
So about what everyone should have expected
So take the risk that AMD ray tracing solutions materialize, or just stick with the tried and true Nvidia.
The rtx are so good I don't see why I'd settle...

Nvidia all the way.
AMD gave industry professionals a 20 minute head-start on sales, via special access code. Their supply was gone before the official release to the public. Disaster. B&H of all places cancelled their release AND PREORDERS due to "substantially low stock".
Edit: B&H techs telling some people they actually received 0 stock.
Reports that most of Europe received 0 stock across the board. GamersNexus is giving it to Azor on Twitter. They also reiterated that is it only competitive in non-RT comparisons.
Confirmed what the B&H sales techs said, they got 0 stock:

Jesus that’s bad... i’m still holding on to my B&H preorder for my Ryzen 5900X because i’m enjoying not stressing to look for the CPU like a desperate man like i did with the 3080.
AMD and paper launches, no one should be surprised.
Somehow /r/amd is shocked. This is a worse launch and benchmarks than Nvidia's. The entire point of this next-gen is RT...so I don't see the point. Unless the AMD cards were literally 50% of the price, why would anyone?
