I want to reply to you Oreth but picking a case is such a personal preference thing. I don't care for the look of the Cooler Master Scout 2 at all. The Corsair 500R looks huge, but I like the 750D/760T models.

Fractal Design has some pretty nice looking stuff.

At least your needs are basic: ATX mobo, 1 SSD, 1 HD.

To be clear I'm looking for an enterprise solution. This is not going to do any gaming.

I'm going to be building databases and running Bloomberg and other data services on a quad screen setup along with Excel and the other office bullshit. I want everything running 1440p as well.

Money isn't much factor but I can't go completely overboard (Hence no 4k )
If you're intending to go FULL ENTERPRISE here, just source it from an OEM. That way it has hardware coverage and you don't have to worry about shit like getting the right case (thermally) and all that.

I assume you want to stick with Intel. Only Xeons support more than one physical CPU, so if you're wanting dual or greater CPU's, follow above advice.

If a single CPU and consumer-level motherboard/memory are all you want, say so and I'll work on a build.

I've used Nvidia NVS 420's for quad monitor support, but I don't know if there's any current equivalent. There is a total number of pixels it can drive across all displays, but I don't recall what that number is. Might be one avenue to check out.

I'm definitely sticking with Intel. I'm on the fence of need between what a consumer build can support and splurging on a full enterprise solution from one of the manufacturers. I'm gonna do more research.

How much disk space are you looking for?

Is RAID 5 adequate or will you need an actual backup solution as well?

I'll need 1 TB SSD storage and probably 8-10TB of HDD. We have a server solution for bulk data storage and backup, alongside with offsite backup.

I'm essentially needing to store about 400-600gb of streaming datasets on the fly during the business day via 2-3 sources. These get pushed to the HDD at end of day. It's all backed up nightly to our server and stored locally on the HDD for the week. Everything is cleaned on Saturday evening for Monday use.

We are currently doing this on a much smaller scale but things need to scale up in the next 4 months. I'd like to be ahead of the curve on it.

I'll also be actively accessing and pulling the data throughout the day into various models.

You're on your own to pick out a case. Any "Extended ATX" case should work.

My thinking on the motherboard/hard drives are, it supports RAID 5 so I included 3 HD's as to configure them in RAID 5.

You may need adapters for the video card if your 4x displays do not have DisplayPort. You will need at minimum, 4x Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cables.

I'm not sure of the power requirements of a system like this, but I figured you'd probably want to get the best you can, hence the 1200W Seasonic platinum-rated.

    *Disclaimer*

I've never built a server/workstation like this, I always source them from OEM's. So if it blows the fuck up or melts a hole in your floor, sorry!

That being said, the above machine is a fine blend of consumer-level and enterprise-level guts. For a full-on server box, I'd still go to an OEM.

Yeah. The more I look at it, the more I think I'm gonna give Lenovo or someone a call. The maintenance and warranty with on-site service is too valuable.

Thanks for pricing everything out. Gives me a sense of the markups for the OEM and all that. I appreciate it.

Np and sorry, I just realized I didn't post the prices, woops.

Part of me wants to build a box like that just to do it, though.

Decent build but you should really aim for a better case that you would want to reuse over and over again.

    I suggest Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV

No longer are you using thumb screws to secure your case, no longer would you have to worry about vibrations causing your case to rattle, shit is beautiful as fuck and has wonderful cable management availability. No support for optical bays but honestly everything is going the way of using USB to load or direct download.

I will second (third?, fourth?) the buy option instead of building a multiprocessor system. I've done it many times in the past for my employer (50-70 linux workstations/servers). While Supermicro makes a good board (and pretty close to the only commercial widely-available multiproc. board) the support is pretty bad. We're talking 2-3 days email response times. Make sure to check Dell, Lenovo and HP for deals.

I am, I'm going to price similar builds from all 3 and see what kind of deal I can manage.

We definitely need quick on-site/email support. I'll likely just be the first major user building up to 5-10 doing similar work. I'll see if any of our data partners have any pull on their end.

If you are going to be doing multiple workstations, make sure to actually call and speak with someone in the small business pre-sales dept. (after getting an idea of the build from the website). They are sometimes authorized to discount based on qty.

Zet, chances are an OEM will want to sell you a hardware RAID solution. It's not a bad idea to get it, depending on how mission-critical this box will be, but it will add to the pricetag vs. the Newegg solution I cobbled together.

Then again, I may be talking out my ass. That Supermicro board may have a low-tier RAID solution that isn't software RAID, I didn't even look.

This box needs to be absolutely bulletproof. It's being built for a very specific purpose. I'm going to get on the horn with the OEM guys during next week.

Alright, looks like I'm finally getting my wedding gift... It'll either be a X34 or a PG348Q.

To go with it I'm probably going to do something along the lines of: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/DNgPnn droppring one of the 16gb's of ram and upgrading the other slightly. I have SSD's to carry over to the new system already.

    yay
