That was a good call, thanks. Up to this now. Seems like this is the best budget card at this level?

Given that I have 12gb of DDR3 ram I can port over would it be worth it to just use that and call it a day at this? Power supply, case, etc should all be reusable.

Just a quick glance at benches but the 1050 may be a minimal upgrade to your 660ti. Have you overclocked it at all? Ram for 1151 is DDR4 so you'll need that too. Even on /r/hardwareswap 8gb DDR4 is going for $50+ and 16GB $100+. Really sucks right now for ram.

Oh well in that case I'd be happy spending half of the cost of the card on DDR4 and calling it a day. Does that sound reasonable?

If you're not looking to ball out gaming that's what I'd do until you want to spend the bread on a powerful GPU. Also, you can upgrade later to a better cpu. I recently finished a build using a G45460 with a XFX R7 360 2GB. Haven't tested yet but I'm excited to. I've read that the G4560 basically made I3's obsolete.

It's not likely I'll ever go hard on a "gaming" pc again. FFXI and FFXIV were the only foray into the MMO / PC gaming world that I've enjoyed. Stuff like Witcher / COD / etc just are never games I'm going to invest my time in.

In the past the justification had been "well I work on very computationally expensive numerical simulations so it's dual purpose" but I have 3 separate allocations on supercomputing CPU / GPU clusters when I need them (i.e. https://www.tacc.utexas.edu/systems/stampede2) and I can do all my testing on any multi-core CPU or any random GPU since all I need to know is that the work is being allocated correctly.

Pretty much all I want at this point for a Windows PC is something that works and is able to stream 4k through Plex to my TV. I have a Linux desktop with AMD Ryzen for anything else I need.

My big take is, if someone still games on a semi regular basis a solid gaming PC can be done cheap with patience and finding the deals. For me personally, it made the most sense because I missed out on everything from 2007-2012 because of XI and a lot of PS2 games because I was in a serious relationship with a non gamer girl that was jealous of my consoles. If you look at my Steam games list all games over 27 hours played are mostly older games. And most games that hover between say 10-27 hours are from running Idle Master to get the Steam cards. I've also sunk a lot of time into some PS1 games and they really don't look bad with shaders and what not applied. Also, the most I've ever paid for a PC game is $30 and I have a ton of awesome games waiting in the wings to play.

I guess what it comes down to though is what you play available for PC and is that a route you want to go. If you ever want to talk builds or what you possibly would be interested in I'm always down to as I love building and to me it's a ton of fun seeing how cheap I can build a quality PC. Here is a link to most of the builds I've done if you or anyone wants to check it out. I had more but I created a new account due to losing login for the other. I still need to update my current build and two others with pictures but below is what I'm about to put up for sale. And the prices I put are what I paid after tax, rebate, coupon, etc.

Now you'd think with these parts, it would be solid. But no! Upon removing the m.2 shield from the motherboard to install the SSD, one of the screwheads just got stripped, the first two were perfectly fine and normal, the 3rd one just disintegrated, it was completely bonkers.
So there i am, all the parts for a shiney new computer, and... I can't install the drive.

Tried everything, but couldn't get a grip on the damned thing. In the end, I went out and got a dremel, covered the rest of the MB and went to town on the screw head, watching those sparks fly as I carved a new track (right word in English?) for the screwdriver was one of the most nervewracking things I did since the air force. 1/10, would not buy Zenith Extreme again ;;

Think I will try to upgrade a few pieces on my computer. Is this a good deal for a processor and will this processor get me through the next like half decade or so? http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...oxed_Processor also it says I will save 30 bones with a compatible motherboard and I also want a new motherboard so what is a good one that i can pick up with it at Microcenter, assuming I should get this processor. I'm assuming you're near the MC in VA? I saw a plethora of open box motherboards for cheap. You basically can get the board for free with that cpu. DDR4 prices suck currently so keep that in mind. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if not doing a K chip, practically any board will be fine? Only real difference should be usb ports, on board sound, and I guess M2 options?

Non K chip = anyboard. Be very weary of the open box boards. Ask a rep to check it's history. I got an ITX H series board a few days ago and it repaired for bent pins. Turns out it wasn't repaired at all and none of the USB ports were working. Lesson learned on my part.

There should be a status of the board like complete, missing X, or damaged and why. Only once out of a number of open box boards I've done was just flat out bad which I exchanged for the same board and open box. But yeah, inspect the pins to make sure they're solid and test ASAP, breadboard preferably.

Should I go for the Ryzen? My friend is saying the Ryzen 1600 is better than the 7600k. And yea im close to the VA Microcenter. That would allow me to use any board since it doesnt have a K?

I feel like this is about to become a really fuckin expensive rabbit hole since I'll also need DDR4. fuck this gay earth

I have a 1700x and I'm happy with it. I can't say I see any true real world difference or a benchmark that would put it over it's Intel rival. However, something that is kind of neat is many people have received R5 1600 chips that are actually 8 cores. It's on /r/amd a bit. The issue with Ryzen however is ram compatibility for 3000+ actually achieving that. So if you're only getting DDR4 2800 or less than it's no worry. But my G.Skill 3200, I can only hit 2800 currently. I haven't fiddled with overclocking it though.

It's all relative really. Not much of a difference can be see on a day to day scale. Most people won't actually see aylny gains or loses between intel and ryzen.

The ram thing he's talking about is the speed rating for ram. Ryzen is real sus when selecting ram. Intel isn't.

I built a Ryzen 7 1700 system and I love it. Overclocked it to 3800 out of the box, stock cooler, no additional voltage and it's super-solid. The only thing with it was, I had to immediately update the BIOS when I first got it to even get it to boot to a Windows 10 installation USB drive. Without the BIOS flash, it kept blue-screening as soon as Windows would try to start up (but at different points, making it feel like a stability problem vs. any other problem).

So if you do go Ryzen, make sure you have a USB drive with the motherboard's latest BIOS file on it, as well as any flashing utilities you would need.

I'm happy that I bought my 4790k when I did, because CPU gains have gone sideways as of late.

If all you're doing is gaming, don't sweat buying kaby lake. It'll hold you for the next 3-4 years before it becomes a real bottleneck.
