    Vet Help

My dog somehow managed to eat a 325 mg Tylenol. He's 85 pounds. Should I be taking him into the vet?

I know it's not safe for cats, I'm not sure about dogs. I personally would probably at least call your vet and see if he should be brought in.

Per this article, any dose is poisonous to a pet. This article states "Dogs will typically experience acetaminophen toxicity at over 75 mg per kg body weight." Reddit thread. Maybe call poison control? Induce vomiting? Obviously, keep a close eye.

    85lb dog, 75mg/kg toxicity, 325mg consumed.

Your dog will very likely be fine if you do nothing.

That was what I had come up with as well Byrth. Wife is out tonight and I'm home with Noah. So I'm basically keeping a close eye on him.

Free to call the vet for a second opinion. I was just matching numbers from this thread.

Vet said call the poison control folks but wouldn't say if I should bring him in. Poison control people want 60 dollars before they even take the phone call. Given his size and the fact that I can't leave until the wife gets home anyways, we shall wait.

Yeah poison control is ludicrous, had a similar issue before and they wanted some money upfront before telling me what Google would. You're dog will be fine, the real question is who even sells 375mg tablets any more? I never see that shot less than 500mg unless it's baby asprin lol.

Got an answer from justanswer.com. Granted it cost 20 dollars but it put me in contact with a live vet. His response was not to worry about it. Stated dogs are safe to be dosed 7mg per pound every 8 hours with no risk of overdose. So for my dog he would have had to have around 600mg.

For some reason I just pictured you going full on Ivan Drogo watching over your dog. "IF HE DIES, HE DIES."

My wife who is a vet tech said that is not a safe dosage and not good at all. All those sources don't take into account possible liver damage. You should get him to a vet as soon as possible to have la work done to check liver values. If the liver values are too high there is a supplement that you can give him to help the liver heal. If it was caught early enough she would have induced vomiting and then put him on IV fluids to prevent damage.

Watch for vomiting inappetence other changes in behavior etc.

The dog won't drop dead from that dosage but if you don't get him to a vet it can cause serious damage internally that will cause problems later on.

She said a lot more technical terms than that I am just paraphrasing.

I've been watching him all day. He's been perfectly fine. Gums are the color they should be. No loss of appetite at all. He's lazy to begin with but he's not laying around any more than he normally would. For him it's like a normal day. I'm going to take him tomorrow just to get checked over to be safe.

That is a good idea. Not trying to scare you just provide info but my wife said she sees a lot of cases like this where the dog doesn't show any outward signs of issue but they have serious internal damage that needs to be treated. So even though he appears ok the vet check up is important to do after ingesting something like that.

The good news is that usually liver damage can be reversed and healed in dogs similarly to how it can be in humans. They have supplements that help that process along faster and more thoroughly.

Had it sitting on the table and I was going to grab a drink. I come out, it's gone, along with a small bowl of cheez its and there's a drool spot. He will eat, literally, anything.

Shoes, socks, hats, toys, used diapers, poop, matchbox cars. Seriously, he's a garbage disposal.

My dog growing up once ate my sister's entire easter basket of chocolate, including an entire foot long chocolate bunny.

    She was completely fine.

It's bakers chocolate that will kill them. Regular chocolate will just make them poop.

Much more complicated than that. Regular chocolate is dangerous for dogs and while they may not show any outward signs of damage it can do serious organ damage particularly to their hearts and livers.

You are correct in that the compound that makes chocolate dangerous for dogs is found in cocoa powder so dark chocolate and bakers chocolate have a higher concentration of that compound and are more dangerous at lower dosages while milk chocolate has been diluted with sugar and milk fat so it generally is less dangerous than other kinds of chocolate in the same quantities.

That being said even with milk chocolate the best idea with your dog is to induce vomiting as soon after ingestion as possible to get it out of their system then get the dog to a vet.

Also Lol Silenka. I heard a story about a guy who got shot in the head by a gun and survived so I guess it must be ok right?

Side note raisins and grapes are also very dangerous for dogs to eat. A lot of people don't know about that one.
