DC is p legit for certain stuff. The people are terrible for the most part. Transplant city.
DC sucks donkey balls, the tourist traps make it unbearable sometimes. I grew up in NYC and it's like the entire city is 42nd street.
Like Zetanio said though its pretty legit for certain stuff.
A little change of plan since I've got a few more days to my vacation now. July 8th - 17th off. Instead of flying, I'm gonna drive my own car there. Take all of Thursday to drive there, stop at some city maybe 2-5 hours outside of DC and stay the night at some cheap hotel, finish the rest of the trip on Friday and make my check-in time. Paying for parking will suck, but oh well.
fri - wed in DC and then... find something else to do on the way back. Haven't gotten much farther than that in my planning lol. Maybe Gatlinburg, TN. That place was just brought to my attention recently. Depends how much vacation money I got after DC. Though I think after the Tourist Trap Hell of DC I'll probably want something a little more low-key.
Head out to Ocean City MD for a few days then drive back.
Most likely not doing Gatlinsburg lol though the drive time isn't what bothers me, more the having to deal with more tourists right after a trip in a tourist trap. Can I hate on tourists while being a tourist myself?
Anyone got a good suggestion for where my first stop should be before DC? I think I'll be taking I-70 to I-79 to I-68 to avoid spending a thousand dollars in tolls. Probably going to leave around 8am cst, maybe do 8 to 10 hours of driving, adding an hour for timezone change, so maybe hoping to get to a town by 5-6pm est so we have time to maybe go spend some time shopping and eating before places close down. Kinda between Columbus, OH and Pittsburgh, PA. Halfway mark seems to be Columbus, so maybe I'll just stop there. Check in at DC hotel isn't until 4pm the next day.
Pittsburgh actually doesn't suck horribly. Haven't been through Columbus in awhile.
Didn't see this thread ~neat.
Flying up from Miami to DC on the 8th, and staying there till the 10th, then training up to NY. We have barely been able to come up with a plan, but everything is reserved and tickets bought, save for the Amtrak up to NYC. I think we're mostly wanting to do the touristy shit, as is we have a White House "tour" thing.
Haha do not do Gatlinburg. It is populated entirely by five things:
1) Old time photo places
2) Miniature golf courses
3) Shitty bars
4) Cabins
5) Mountainfolk
I went with like 10 guys / 10 girls when I was living in Nashville; we rented a sick mansion of a cabin (hot tub, mountain views, etc.) for like nothing and had a great time, but I think we spent a cumulative total of 25 minutes in the downtown area. If you want something else to do, drive to Dewey Beach and stay in a shitty hotel to get some beach time in.
My car has been broken into 14 times in four years (that's a real number; not an estimate) and two years ago I had a gun pulled on me after getting attacked by a group of like 12 16-year old kids outside Russia House at like 1 AM. It is not a safe city, but I enjoy living there. What drives me crazy is that I drive a soft top 4-door Wrangler; if you want to break in, just unzip the fucking window. Instead these dickheads slash it every single time.Originally Posted by thetruepandagod

Btw that lol is not meant as an insult, just haven't thought about it in so long.
Pittsburgh has about 24 hours of quasi-unique and interesting things to do before you wonder why you're visiting Philadelphia's more polite but less interesting cousin.
Srs suggestions:
* Eat at a pretentiously unpretentious restaurant
* Carnegie Museums of Natural History - Sorry not sorry. Best gem/mineral collection I've ever seen.
* Pirates game
* Live music (and decent bar food) at James Street Tavern
* Brawl with yinzers on Carson Street. (just shout "thah stillers sahck!" and they'll come to you)
* This place has random activities you might enjoy if you pick the right day.
* Go for a walk in a park... jk you're done
I worked in DC (visiting nurse) and saw most everything. I was only there in the daytime, rarely in the evenings (and always escorted to my car if it was a bad neighborhood in NE/SE DC). My favorite restaurant is Pho Viet on 14th street, I want to say Columbia Heights metro exit. It's not super fancy and expensive, but the people are nice, the food is good, it's like my oasis in the desert.![]()
