Got into it with a friend on FB (and his friends) who said we were a country of pussies because people aren't attacking ISIS over this. I tried to point out that killing ISIS in the Middle East wouldn't have stopped this particular incident. I kept trying to bring up the LA guy and how he doesn't have ISIS connections. If the Orlando guy got caught, and the LA guy didn't, what would the conversations today look like?

Do not get me wrong, I pointed out in there that I do understand that radicalization is an easy justification for people to perform these acts. But they wildly wanted to ignore the homophobic aspect to the events and that the mentality is not even remotely limited to radical Islamists.

Did he tell you that the LA guy apparently didn't plan to attack the gay pride parade (although we don't know what he was doing with all those weapons), and that the suggestion that he planned to was poor communication?

Howell told investigators that he was going to the Pride festival but did not make additional statements about his intentions, Rodriguez said.

Howell was booked on charges that include possession of a firearm, possession of an improvised-explosive device and possession of high-capacity magazines, Rodriguez said.

Regardless if he did not, hate against LGBT are not limited to ISIS.

Let's look at the Orlando guy:

He sees two men kissing and decides to punish LGBT for it. Now, radical Islam is very very likely the reasoning that he felt he was justified in carrying this act out. But the idea of gays being "icky" is not strictly an Islamic ideal. We all know this. Spend two seconds around any Christian right and it's pretty obvious. And we can't say it's just Islamists that take it out on others because there are nutjob Christians who also lash out with guns for "sinful acts." (hi2u Planned Parenthood shootings)

American culture is a wide spectrum on thoughts about gays to "we should give them all rights" to "make them second class citizens" to "kill them all this is why God hates us." If you are raised with the latter, and you can surround yourself in a societal bubble where others agree with you, you become more justified that you are "right" from the echo chamber.

The worst enemy for types like the Orlando guy is honestly lack of cultural assimilation. Guy was a US born citizen, but I bet you $10 spent his his whole life acting like he was an Afghani who just so happens to be living in the US. There are many who are raised this way, and I think that the bigger issue.

If ISIS didn't exist, I do not doubt at all this act would have still happened. As long as some kind of fanaticism existed, he was probably going to do this. And there is no amount of ISIS people we could have killed in the middle east to have stopped him.

to everyone campaigning against transgender rights, gay marriage, gay adoptions - every last politician who voted to shoot down legislation that would protect LGBTQ people from workplace discrimination, etc. - all of those same people who are now feigning horror and outrage and sadness at these events, even while the very next time a similar bill or issues hits the scene they'll go right back to fighting against the LGBTQ community's right to exist:
