Holy fuck, what a huge sense of relief. And for a price a lot lower than I figured. I was expecting over $7mil

Well crosbys AAV after his ELC was 8.7m, and theres no way Gaudreau was gonna match it.. I dont know many players who bank up off their first post ELC contract.

The flames also bought up only 1 or 2 UFA yrs, which is surprising.

I think that was key. Gaudreau wanted more money, Flames wanted more term, both conceded in some way to get it done.

Also, can't really compare Sid's contract to anyone else's at this point. He'll be making $8.7mil for like 8 more years. When he initially signed it, it was good money, but let's be honest, he's getting underpaid when you compare it to contracts like Kane or Toews or Ovie

At this rate, were gonna have another lockout when the cba expires again.

The NHL could leapfrog all pro sports and be worth more than the net worth of the Premier League and the NFL combined and Bettman would still find grounds for a lockout.

How long ago did Sid sign his post-ELC contract? What has been the average annual cap increase since then? Not to go full nerd, but time value of money is a real concept; you can't compare absolute dollar figures.

Forsberg got 6 x $6M, so it seemed fair to me.

His first big none RFA contract was signed for the 08-09 season and was a $8.7mil cap hit when the salary cap was at $56.7mil. So yeah, like 1/7th a team's salary space at the time and fitting for him considering who he is. He made $9mil for the first 4 years and then $7.5 for the last year.

He signed a 12-year extension when that one ended (which was a 5-year contract) which was at the same $8.7mil hit. Albeit, the first 3 years he was getting paid $12mil a year, followed by $10.9mil for 2 years, then $10mil for a year, than $9mil and it just drops from there. The last 3 years of that contract, he gets paid $3mil per, so while the cap hit is the same, he's making all his big money up front. He'll also be 37 when his current contract is done.

Dunno if that answered your question at all

Edit: So yeah, my original post above was kind of wrong. Considering what he's actually getting per year, he's getting paid more than Ovie, PK and Malkin for the next couple seasons. But his money drops off quite a bit and all 3 will be making more than him per year in a few years here. Toews, Kane and Kopitar all make more than him per year if you compare their contracts yearly.

Crosbys contract was also done pre-cba though.

% of cap is a fine proxy; Johnny be Good is well under Sid even if he got $8.7M as well. Sid was 15.3% of cap, Johnny would theoretically be at 12.2% ($71.4M cap right now IIRC). That was the point I was trying to make.

Ugh, Griffith claimed by TOR. Grats Obsidian. Kid has very high potential. Here's an example:

Was about to come here to ask who he was haha. That's two seasons in a row we've snaked a pretty good prospect off the waiver wire. I do wonder who we're going to lose in the process though.

I see I see. I do want to say that while I'm happy we signed him before the start of the season, Johnny definitely does not deserve Sid money lol

Kris Versteeg released by Edmonton... only to be signed by Calgary. Supposedly for 1 year, less than $1mil. The Seth Griffith claim by Toronto seems rough for Boston. I thought he was a pretty notable prospect for them
