Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won a primary she wasn't running in yesterday via write-in ballots.

I mean is the assumption that he's trying to throw the district to repubs by staying on the ballot? I don't see what he has to gain from this

I think the assumption is he can still finagle a win in the general if he and the party tries hard enough.

He should choose to die or move out of the state.

or possibly split the vote and family court guy can win the general by a miracle.

would that even hold up in court, though? Seems like an awful lot of risk(and public shame) over an election he probably wouldn't even win if he "won"

If he ran hard on the Working Families ticket and won it would be perfectly legitimate.

but he's not going to, has repeated declared his intentions not to, conceded the primary to AOC, and simply doesn't want to jump through the onerous hoops he'd have to in order to get his name off (die, move out of state, or engage in weird "run for another office in another district" chicanery on the WF ticket).

I don't understand how he's stuck on the ballot even though the primary hadn't happened yet. Why are ballots locked in prior to a primary? Seems asinine.

The primary for house races already happened...that's how AOC is the Democratic nominee and this new big deal.

Don't be confused by the New York Governor's primary not happening yet - it hasn't, but they do House primaries and gubernatorial primaries on separate voting days.

Oh, so he didn't run as a Democrat in the primary? And went straight to the ballot under the working family party?

He was on the ballot for both the Dems and the WF party - won the WF vote and lost the Dem vote to AOC. It's not uncommon for New York Democrats to run in a general election as a hybrid Dem/WF nominee - they just happened to split this time. I think a similar thing is going to happen with Cynthia Nixon as she's been endorsed by WF over Cuomo.

Currently, eight states allow for fusion voting: Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, New York, Oregon, South Carolina and Vermont. Though it is permitted in all eight of these states, fusion voting is only commonly practiced in New York.
