Lowest voter turnout in quite some time in Chicago for the mayoral race. About 20% of the pop came out on a wintry February to vote for a non-incumbent mayor and their local Aldermen. Likely due to voter fatigue from midterms and an overwhelmingly large candidate pool for mayor. Run-off elections will proceed with Toni Preckwinkle vs Lori Lightfoot (Chicago machine vs. anti-machine). Should be interesting around here.

Texas apparently signed a 'Save Chik-fil-a' law into the books in response to San Antonio preventing Chik-fil-a from opening a storefront in its airport due to their support of anti-LGBTQ religious organizations.

Georgia will be allowed to use it's outdated voter machines for this year's election, but will be forced to switch to paper ballots in 2020 before the presidential primary.

The order from U.S. District Court Judge Amy Totenberg Thursday also requires the state to cease using its direct-recording electronic voting machines after 2019 and expresses doubts about the state's ability to roll out its new ballot-marking device system in time for the March 24, 2020, presidential primary election.

In the decision, Totenberg also directs the Georgia secretary of state's office to develop a plan to "address errors and discrepancies in the voter registration database" and have paper copies of poll books at each voting precinct.

Ultimately, Totenberg wrote that she deferred to the state's legislative and procurement processes to select and implement a new system in time for next year's elections.

"The Court remains concerned, based upon the entirety of the record evidence, about the State's capacity to manage a transition to paper ballots for the 2019 elections while overseeing and undergoing a simultaneous transition to the newly enacted voting system during this time," Totenberg wrote in the order.

On July 29, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced Dominion Voting Systems would be the state's new elections vendor, winning a $107 million contract to provide new touch-screen machines that print out a paper ballot with a summary of the voter's selection plus a QR code that is scanned and stored.

Louisiana has a gubernatorial primary election today. The incumbent Democrat Edwards in a jungle primary vs a few Republicans. If Edwards gets 50% he doesn't have to go head to head in the general. Polls have him in the high 40s so we'll see.

Looks like Edward is going to have a runoff against Eddie. Primary vote was 46.2% vs (27.4 + 24.0) so I wouldn't expect him to get 50% unless some serious turnout stuff happens.

Kentucky's governor race is tomorrow. It's Republican incumbent Matt Bevin facing Democrat Attorney General Andy Beshear.

Matt Bevin is a tea party conservative that has managed to piss off the majority of the state by attempting to destroy teacher pensions. He's the 2nd most unpopular governor in the country. He has lead in one poll. It was in June. However, he also trailed every poll in his first election and won by a significant margin.

Andy Beshear is the son of former, well liked, governor Steve Beshear. He's the attorney general of the state and has lead or tied in every poll except one.

Kentucky has a non-zero chance of electing a Democrat to state wide office. Bevin really is that unpopular here.

Not as important overall, but would be a nice turn around for my locality.

Molinaro, the Repub that ran against Cuomo for NYS governor, is my county executive. His polling has been falling steadily, down to just 54% last election, and the current Dem candidate could reasonably take his position. There was a large influx of Dem voters over the past couple years, about 15,000 total, and some of the races in the area went Repub by less than 1000 votes.

The GOP is also hoping that Molinaro may be able to take a larger role in the near future, so losing this election could stifle some of that. We'll see.

This election gonna be so fucking close. 4 of the largest cities haven’t reported much, and they’re democratic strongholds. Louisville has reported less than half. Also waiting on Daviess and Warren (western Kentucky university) counties
