Sega has licensed new versions of its Mega Drive/Genesis console to compete with the upcoming NES Classic Edition from Nintendo, meaning only one thing: The console wars have gone retro.

Fans went nuts when Nintendo announced the NES Classic Edition was coming this year. The game system is a precious miniature version of the console that made so many of us fall in love with video games as kids. Sega's versions, which coincide with Sonic's 25th anniversary, kick up the offerings a notch with 80 built-in games available in two housings: one console and one handheld. That's 50 more than the 30 Nintendo is offering with the NES Classic Edition.

The handheld version also has a SD slot so you can get even more games. Both are available for preorder through U.K. online retailer for about $65 each. It's worth noting that these mini Sega systems are not an entirely new thing, but this is a Sonic 25th branded rerelease. There are a few from prior years floating around Amazon, and the adorable Sega Genesis II was one of the first pint-sized consoles (although you still had to load individual games into that one).

Can we get a miniature PlayStation, Sony? That would be amazing.

If this can use original carts, then nintendo just got rekt, but holy shit how can you include shinobi 2 and 3, but no revenge of shinobi, or super monaco gp, no super hang-on, no landstalker or beyond oasis, no super thunder force 2, no michael jackson moonwalker, no ghouls and ghosts.

The big difference, is that the classic NES is made directly from Nintendo, while this seems to have been made by a company hired by Sega, which means the quality might be less good

Also, Phantasy Star 2 and 3, but not 4!?

2 had one of the highest random encounter rates known to man, and 3 was a mixed bag due in large part to its generation system and setting. The fourth game was one of the best RPGs of the entire 16-bit era. It did a better job presenting a main character's death than any of Square's games did at the time IMO.

Yeah, no Phantasy Star 4 or Shining Force games is pretty fail. As someone else said, missing Landstalker and Beyond Oasis too. ......I might only care about RPGs from classic systems, besides some other obvious classics.

From what I've read is that this is just a Chinese company that's been capitalizing it with no real affiliation.(The mega drive console no idea about the hand held) They just license the Sega Mega Drive name. The thing that spurred a lot of attention was the mini NES and the fact that they updated the artwork for the 25th anniversary.

That's why half the games are basically "shovelware"
