I think coming off as a softer man in awe of his wife's achievements was 100% the right way to play it. He is definitely getting old and there's a pretty substantial chance that he'll become incompetent or die if Hillary goes to two terms (as there is for her as well), but any advice he gives while he's still lucid will probably be worth more than 8 years of Melania lucidity.
