well Bush Senior is not relevant to the specified time period and since the article mentioned the Islamic voter shift from Bush's 2000 electoral victory to present day obviously his first election was not considered within the span either. his presidency itself however marked the decisive and intractable shift as Dubya's Middle Eastern policies, as well as the Katrina response backlash, were what flipped the Muslim vote as well as driving away black voters in unprecedented numbers, in addition to making him the first Republican to consistently lose the Asian vote. Hispanic alienation did come later, presently at an all time high.

I guess it just depends on whether you see a Trump defeat as the end or beginning of a movement.

His loss is undoubtedly a good thing but the kind of thinking that got him there won't just disappear the day after. One would hope the lesson learned by the Republican party from this election is how to avoid future Trumps, not how to wield them more effectively.

i don't see him as a movement in either termini. he is a bloviating demagogue tapping into the oldest of societal faultlines- nativist the outsider is corrupting our national character nostalgic triumphalism in a manner Pericles often lamented in ancient Athens. as you say the thinking that got him to the show will not dissipate the day after, it's yet to dissipate after several thousand years of human politicking, but a refutation rather than a validation through victory is always the desired course.

and one would imagine the Republicans would be far more likely to avoid future Trumps should his candidacy flail and burn against a detested public figure who has spent the majority of the campaign season under FBI investigation. as the more gutless of Republican lawmakers have demonstrated this cycle they are willing to tolerate nearly anything so long as it produces victory, what they cannot tolerate is failure, and losing the popular vote total for what would be 6 of the past 7 elections primarily as a result of losing all the minority votes (even as minority demographics shift against them) will better affect reformation than teaching them that doubling down on the disaffected white male vote can still win elections for a few more cycles.
