i don't see him as a movement in either termini. he is a bloviating demagogue tapping into the oldest of societal faultlines; nativist the outsider is corrupting our national character nostalgic triumphalism in a manner Pericles often lamented in ancient Athens. as you say the thinking that got him to the show will not dissipate the day after, it's yet to dissipate after several thousand years of human politicking, but a refutation rather than a validation through victory is always the desired course.

and one would imagine the Republicans would be far more likely to avoid future Trumps should his candidacy flail and burn against a detested public figure who has spent the majority of the campaign season under FBI investigation. as the more gutless of Republican lawmakers have demonstrated this cycle they are willing to tolerate nearly anything so long as it produces victory, what they cannot tolerate is failure, and losing the popular vote total for 6 of the past 7 elections primarily as a result of losing all the minority votes even as minority demographics shift against them will better affect reformation than anything else.

This will only happen once Republicans lose badly enough that they can no longer effectively obstruct. Sadly, I do not believe that 2016 is the year this happens.

Maddow just talked about a few excerpts from Eichenwald's Newsweek piece coming out tomorrow. It's on Trump + Russian connection. Not clear how big a bombshell it will be, but the takeaways from the preview are:

1) Russia stopped feeding hacked information to Wikileaks right after Trump insulted the Khan family when they thought he would be forced to drop out of the race.
2) Western European intelligence agencies are collecting intelligence on Trump to figure out what his connections to Russia are.
3) Those Western European officials are expressing concerns that Trump winning the election would pose a serious threat to the future of the NATO alliance.

I hope there are more details to the story, because while this is definitely important, I could see it being glossed over if there isn't a smoking gun presented.
