considerably less turnout even. Romney won 1.3 million more votes, McCain about 300,000 more. last successful bid saw Bush earn 2.4 million more.

the difference was Hillary was a much worse general election candidate than Barack Obama.

He'll probably pass McCain when the mail ballots are counted, but regardless they're all +/- a million votes for turnout.

Universal mail-voting should be a thing yes.

Here in CA on election day, one of the biggest headaches to deal with is vote-by-mail status.

When you come in, the first thing you do is have the polling place check if you are in their roster of voters. If you're registered and it's your polling place, you're in there. The next thing you do is sign the roster.
UNLESS,
there is a notation in the roster that says you were issued a vote-by-mail ballot. If that is the case, then unless you have your VBM ballot to surrender and have voided, your only option is to vote provisionally.
The vast majority reaction of many people who come in and have VBM in the roster is either "I never signed up for VBM" or "I never got it".

Now, generally I assume PEBKAC, but this is a frequent enough problem*, that I can assuredly tell you that unless universal mail-voting is entirely fucking done with certified/registered mail, it is a goddamn atrocious idea.

*My precinct did over a hundred provisionals yesterday, we nearly couldn't close the sealed folder the things are put in at the end of the night. And even when the numbers aren't that bad, it is always shit to deal with during the day.

i mean, a lot of people think dems are currently lacking in political talent right now. so if you think you got the goods i don't see why there should be a limit on what you can achieve in a less than standard amount of time. at any rate even if you start going for broke starting now, does that truly hurt your chances later on as well?
