Welcome to why I am an advocate for stronger emphasis on States and less on Federal action. California's almost too big to be one country (and is FAR too large to be one state), with sweeping federal policies, let alone all of the US.

Problem is too many people like the sweeping federal policies... when it works in their favor. And even if you generally don't it's really easy to get caught up in the turn about is fair play mindset when your party gets into power.

Wonder if Cali will ever get broken up. Every few years something seems to get brought up and get some support but then quietly dies. Think most recently was a 6 way vote

This may have only happened twice in recent history but you should consider the ramifications of removing it outright and simply using popular vote alone. Yes the majority of elections ended up with the popular vote going to the winner, but you have to consider the dramatic differences in how the candidates would campaign if there was no EC. You'd never see them in small communities or low population states. A lot of regular people would end up feeling totally abandoned by their candidate because they'd be spending 95% of their time in huge metro population areas and very little if any in small towns.

small communities and low population states are already drastically overrepresented in the legislature with a Senator from South Dakota representing 830,000 people having the same power as one from Texas representing 30,000,000 people. the House allotment is less extreme but still disproportional, and SCOTUS is not impacted by population demographics. asking for one of the three branches to have proportional representation, to truly have 1 vote mean the same as any other vote and cease the effective disenfranchisement of the majority of the country in presidential elections, does not seem so demanding a request.

whether or not Trump wins the popular vote or you were a fan of Al Gore is not especially relevant. it is an anachronism from an aristocratic age far less comfortable with democracy and as every other first world nation but America has discovered has no place in the modern world.

Was this same counter projecting a Clinton win previously? I'm highly skeptical of this, given that California has by far the bulk of the outstanding votes. I think Obama was only up on Romney by like 1.9% the morning after in '12 but won by like 3.8% when it was over.

NYTimes still projecting her to win by 1.2%, with California only 71% counted and Washington 64% in. Only other sub 90% counted states are Arizona, Utah and Colorado.

it's never been put to the legal test and the relevant amendment says no one can be elected president more than twice (or if they finish 2+ years of someone else's term only be elected once), and though there is a clause stating one cannot be vice president unless they are eligible to serve as president there is nothing specifically stating a president cannot serve more than two terms.

basically if anyone ever tries it SCOTUS will decide.
