Well the thing about FFXI is that an MMO is about as fair grounds for meritocracy as you can get; the only interference really is inevitable taint from human relationships. Republicans' version of meritocracy via capitalism conveniently ignores structural advantages of race, class, gender, etc. that mean that the elite of society are not necessarily elite so much as merely privileged.

Cronyism can and did develop in XI, but it's nothing compared to the inherited privileges that are passed down between wealthy generations in society.

Oh I forgot the most important distinction. HNMLS looked down and scoffed at regular people, seeking to deny them the opportunity to enter to the upper echelons and get leet gear by outright competition.

Republicans look down and scoff at regular people, but they deny regular people upward social mobility by actively exploiting them and deceiving them to act against their own best interests in order to maintain the status quo.

I mean besides being morally reprehensible and all, the GOP really deserves admiration for what they do.

Maybe my experience was radically different by I felt like at the HNMLS level, JP vs. NA/EU wasn't really a big thing after 2007~ JP shells seemed to rarely compete for World Spawns outside of their own prime time.

The difference was the "HNMLS Level". As a welfare/casual player the game was dramatically different versus being a prominent player in endgame. Some JP players would invite NA players to XP parties because they recognized the shell.

And in terms of competition, the only real competition we had was either late night or early morning, and even then it was common knowledge that we had our turn on kings during a specific spread of hours, and outside of that they would often fall to our Japanese counterparts. Except Sandworm, Japanese players did not sleep for that NM

If anything, this election has taught us that only Dems care about how squeaky clean their candidate is because the Reps sure as hell didn't.

I don't think people care much about squeaky clean as they do someone with some fucking personality that can be PERCEIVED as being relatable. Trump, for some reason, people found more relatable than Clinton(though really this shouldn't be a surprise). If you keep relying on the minority vote and young votes then you need someone that can spark their interest and can light a fire under their ass. That or you need someone that can be more relateable to blue collar white people.

I don't think people care much about squeaky clean as they do someone with some fucking personality that can be PERCEIVED as being relatable. Trump, for some reason, people found more relatable than Clinton(though really this shouldn't be a surprise). If you keep relying on the minority vote and young votes then you need someone that can spark their interest and can light a fire under their ass. That or you need someone that can be more relateable to blue collar white people.

Yeah, I started on Phoenix is 2003/2004. It was a commonly bitched about thing in my early LSs.

I wasn't on Sylph until like 2009. I wasted a number of years in Asura trying to bootstrap my casual friends up with me. Even in like 2006 and 2007 I didn't really see JP shells competing during NA primetime and I was in the Aery daily.

I mean for XP parties, yeah the JP onry thing existed but that's because 95% of NA players (pretty much everyone NOT in a top 3 HNMLS) was certain to be fucking awful unless they were the Bard or healer.

Was on Lakshmi for most my early career so heavy jp population. One reason I got invites was because changed my main to rdm so automatic invites before even fully logging in lol. And then some of them eventually remembered me not being a total mouth breath so would invite/accept invites when on other jobs. Originally starting out as blm was rough though

Bismarck was the same between JP and NA shells, but we also had the kuwati guilds that had no issues with botting that fucked over the HNMLS scene for a good 15+ months. Was really fucking annoying when the JP shells would hold kings for 10 hours to get them back into their primetime before the enrage timers were implemented.
