Correct my ignorance, but don't those mail in ballots simply get counted as "popular vote" and apparently not really mean anything? Honestly asking since this whole EC/popular vote thing still slightly confuses me.

In a Presidential election, absentee ballots go to the vote count for the state you register to vote in, despite living in another state. A guy I work with here in DC, for example, had his vote count in New York because he gets an absentee ballot. I'm proposing expanding the system, which I think is really our best method, so that if you register to vote you're guaranteed a ballot to send in. No taking time off or waiting in line needed.

of course looking at raw vote totals is sophistry given population growth and proportion of eligible voters is the more meaningful measure. 200 million voters may well happen but it means less in an electorate of 400 million than one of 300 million nay

This is what CA does and it's the best, imo.

They mail you two thick guides (state and local) of all propositions about a month in advance, as well as a ballot. You can:

- Mail the ballot back any day up to and including election day (as long as it's postmarked).
- Turn the completed ballot into your precinct the day of.
- Turn in the ballot blank at your precinct to vote in person.

It's so good. The fact that all states can't or won't do this is very telling.

My only concern for mail in ballots is intentional tampering and fraud. Without some kind of approval system people can check after the fact, there's no way of knowing whether your ballot even made it to the precinct.

Unless you had designated ballot drop off locations open 7 days 18+ hours a day, a week prior to the election, so people of all work shifts can participate.

Being mailed a ballot and turning it in yourself sounds like the most reasonable approach if you are truly hesitant about fraud.

It would take a lot of work to somehow make dropping off a letter an hour(s)-long ordeal.
