I've been looking at the EC for years now and this election has really made it more fun.

Since the argument for the popular vote is usually that it will give too much power to denser populated areas/cities/states and weaken central US , looking at other alternatives that aren't ancient and more in tune with the current demographic of the US can get interesting.

Maybe an argument for abolishing the "Winner-take-all" system where a state like Florida in 2000 wouldn't give up its entire 29 EC votes for a difference of only 537 popular votes would be better. If you get 51% of the popular vote of the state, you get 51% of its total electoral votes so instead of winning all 29 in 2000, you'd win 14-15.

The problem is voting to make a change is always stomped out by republicans and oh look who it benefits every time.

So did a quick Excel on this using Politico results for each state. Didn't do any rounding because I wasn't accounting for any third party votes may have gained an EV in some states and definitely 1-2 in Utah.

Using this split based on popular vote in each state, Trump wins: 256.511 - 252.316

So rough 29 EVs unaccounted for due to 3rd party

At that point it'd be a house decision to which I'd assume it'd be Trump, McMullan, or Clinton.

I feel as if it has the potential to empower the 3rd party spoiler effect by a lot and we have no coalition system that allows the plurality of voters to win when they split their vote.

The system you've suggested is pretty much Canadas election system, each province is broken up into ridings, we vote for MP in our riding, each MP that wins is given a seat in the house of commons, the leader of the party that wins the most seats becomes prime minister.

Now because we have more then 2 major parties you can end up having the party in charge win a minority government by winning the majority of seats but still have less the 50% of the total seats, which isn't always bad be ause then you have the parties comprimising with each other to get over 50% of the vote to get legislation passed, could also lead to parties banding together for some super dick level obstructionism, but that honestly seems to happen less often then coalition governments.

In order for that system to function in the states you'd need to rebuild the entire system from the ground up, which pretty much isn't happening.

And in addition it'd made the house the definite go-to voice which would make state legislatures that much more important when it came to drawing district lines.

In essence root cause not fixed especially with a strong third party showing.

The worst thing about trying to do anything to the EC is realizing that you really can't do anything. To get rid of it you'd need to pass an amendment to the constitution.

Then you have to realize that hey Republicans (Who benefit greatly from the EC) control most of our governments now so that won't happen anytime soon.

But hey I'll just take comfort in the fact that I, like most people, will forget about the EC in a year. Talk about how fucked up it was as Trump takes both the popular and EC in 2020. And groan about it again in some two decades or some shit.

Probably while i enjoy some beachfront property in charlotte or some shit.

Reddit's CEO admitted to altering users posts on the subreddit, which has opened one big ole can of worms for the site now since it's unknown if this has been a long term thing, especially given all the cries of CTR controlling large portions of reddit during the election.
