i was thinking about it for a bit because they're fairly polarizing comments. but honestly they don't change trump's base, which wasn't changing anyway. with anyone on the fence it might change their minds because nobody likes being called a racist, no matter how racist they are.

I think better phrasing would have been "some" of his supporters, saying "half" collects a fairly large amount of people into that metaphorical basket.

Yeah, I have no idea. It seems like a high-variance move in a situation where being cautious would be a better strategy, but I think it probably won't matter much. If Obama wasn't hurt at the polls with his "desperately clinging to guns and religion" comment, I don't see why this would be much different.

Hillary being tone deaf? Maybe she should get a hearing aid.

i agree it seems like a high variance move. but if the KKK/trump ads didn't have much effect then this won't likely have much either

the numbers aren't good for Hillary. she received a larger than average post-convention bounce and has suffered a larger than average post-convention bounce retraction. she's obviously still the considerable favorite, and the debates are likely to favor her, but all the Hillary might turn Texas blue and win by Reagan numbers nonsense is over

Unless it shifts again. Lots of 3rd party an undecideds out there who could be swayed by debates or whatever.

yeah, it's hard to tell if it was just the bounce coming down or the foundation/email garbage taking its toll. i'm thinking it's a lot more of the latter and a little of the former. little shits like matt lauer doing what he did doesn't help.

not that i don't expect her to, but hillary is gonna need to crush trump on the debate stage to get some breathing room.

Hillary shows contempt for people in her "basket". I think she blew a gasket. Her campaign headed for a casket.
I'm dead, this election is like watching a live sitcom.

Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida are all tossups right now on 538 (between 40-60% in both polls-only and polls plus) - but they are states that Hillary doesn't need to hit 270.

Of the states she needs, the most vulnerable is Colorado, where she's at 74.8% in polls plus. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New Hampshire are all between 75%—85%.

Check that, New Hampshire is 71.4%, that's the most vulnerable of the states she needs

The idea that calling a significant share of Trump's base out as racist is controversial is mind-boggling to me.

Any elected GOP official who is throwing down for Trump at this point is endorsing racism, sexism, and it's disgusting. They are doing so much long-term damage to the party that they're going to regret it once the post-election hangover sets in.

Trump must have some choice dirt on whoever is running the AP right now. It's breathtaking how bad their reporting has been the past few weeks.

Right. She's not apologizing for calling them racist, just using "half" as a generalization, which tbh isn't really far from the truth considering how many Trump supporters think Obama is a secret Muslim or support a complete Muslim ban. It's not like there aren't numbers to back this up or anything. The AP tweet is incomplete and inaccurate. In fact, in her original statement she said there needs to be empathy for the segment of Trump supporters who are just frustrated and feel left out. Anyone who's part of the racist, sexist part of Trump's base is never going to be a Hillary supporter anyway.
