Perhaps someone can help me understand how a 3rd party candidate will ever be viable if the general consensus is that people must always vote for one of the 2 major parties, because 3rd party isn't viable.

It won't be. A winner take all system will always establish equilibrium around two parties. WHICH two parties that is can change, but the number will always be two.

As I've said before, change comes from the leftward drift of the population. The GOP is offsetting this by trying to tack hard right, but everyone outside their hardcore base is slowly drifting left. Just look at the change in attitude towards gay marriage over ten years. As the population moves left, so can the Democrats (see: both Obama and HRC's positions on gay marriage).

Leftward drift applies to parties too. Which the GOP finally becomes unviable, whatever replaces them or however it reinvents itself, the center will shift left as a result. That's the best you can hope for.

Confused how during primaries everyone laughed cause millenials were irrelevant and not enough to win the nomination, but now that were in the general it's all their fault.

It is all for appearances. They are just making excuses for why Clinton isn't blowing away Trump. It has nothing to do with her, but everything to do with Sander's supporters, is the line being given. And since millenials are thought of being young, they should just shut up and vote how they are told to vote and not make decisions of their own.

It is rather mind-blowing, isn't it. Small enough numbers to be irrelevant in the primaries, but huge numbers when it comes to the general.
