He wouldn't be able to capitalize on correctly identifying the problem as well as he has if there were other politicians willing to just come out and say "the problem is Islam". Something like that, but not so much moderates as young Muslim men who are already angry but haven't yet decided their anger should become violence. They want someone to blame so ISIS comes along and says "America is to blame. Look at this speech by their next president. Join us and strike before they come here and kill us."

Yeah, but take one step back. Why all the dumping on Muslims? Oh it's because every goddamn time a bomb goes off in a crowd it's a Muslim who rigged it to blow.

It's not every Muslim, hell it's probably not even most. I know plenty of good-hearted decent people who happen to also be Muslim, but that doesn't mean there isn't a common thread in all of this. There's a pattern of behavior and a reason for that pattern. In public life no one is even willing to entertain the notion that the root of the problem might be the ideological teachings of a centuries old warlord.

Part of the reluctance to consider that possibility is rooted in some of our fundamental principles, namely the freedom of religion. If we encounter a religion which happens to teach something untenable within our society, such that if it would amount to a crime if perpetrated by an individual, then we'd be put in the awkward position of choosing between defending our principles and defending the rule of law. We instinctively want to avoid that dilemma. Addressing that dilemma is a lose-lose scenario because we either have to give up our commitment to freedom of religion, or we give up safety/the rule of law. There might be a third option, but I've yet to hear it put forward and we'll never find one if everyone just continues to stick their fingers in their ears and scream like a petulant child every time the issue comes up.

What bugs me is that he already had a civil suit going about police abuse and still figured the best way to combat all the hateful treatment against Muslims that he perceived was to blow stuff up in New York.
