The horrifying thing is, the eastern half of Ukraine, the half being bombed back to the stone age is the half of Ukraine that was the most Russiocentric. Where they used to be treated as all but Russians, now they are thought of as subhuman. Putin turned a divided country completely against Russia for no god damn reason. Hell, other ex-Soviet countries who were Russia friendly are now furiously making inroads towards the EU...

Right, but trust me when I say this is just so they can declare some sort of moral victory through bullying.

They're not going to stop at Mariupol. It's for posturing and nothing more. In Putin's mind, Ukraine doesn't exist. It's a Russian province like Ontario is to Canada, and as such he's not kidnapping Ukraine citizens he's "detaining Russians".

My point is Russia could absolutely do some horrifying shit to the lot of them if they so desired. They could starve them all out if they decided to take it to another level.

So yes, things can without question get amplified.

I don't disagree, what I'm saying is there isn't really much more to entice the citizens to "surrender" when the consequences of doing so aren't really beneficial.
