My mom and all the other old Hispanic ladies in northern NJ and NYC seem to use reusable bags for groceries. For whatever that's worth.

Replacing plastic with worse plastic is a bad idea. We should be switching to paper bags or something else, maybe cardboard or some type of fabric or linen.

If people were switching to cotton totes it would be great, but they are switching to a thicker, more plasticy bag that requires more fossil fuels and leaves a bigger carbon footprint that takes many times the years longer to degrade and must be used hundreds of times before they outweigh single use.

Sweden’s been trying to solve the plastic issue by making plastic more expensive, thus encouraging people to use other things, as well as encouraging companies to recycle them. A single-use plastic bag at a grocery store costs about 0.75 usd to purchase, and a paper bag costs 0.3 to purchase.

It’s cut plastic bag consumption by more than half, so it’s certainly helped.
