looks like he's recognizing the breakaway separatist regions as independent states which means impending military support and in all likelihood an (increased) Russian troop presence. Ukraine will have to quit the provinces, and all claim to them, or almost assuredly trigger a conventional war with Russia. once again they are faced with the choice of accepting the dismemberment of their country or a full-scale invasion.

reckon what is to come will be determined by the bite of Western reaction. if Putin can get more proxy states surrounding Russia borders and the remnant of the Ukraine no closer to joining NATO without firing a shot he will likely avoid the possibility of further backlash and be content for the nonce. the Ruskies are very much of the 'war is diplomacy by other means' school, they will readily use violence but it is only a means to an end. but, if there is abundant Western weakness / indifference he may well be motivated to risk the biscuit for further gains. appeasement in action.

of course much depends on Ukrainian reaction. hitherto they have accepted the loss of territory for the sake of peace, but a people can only be pushed so far and the claimed borders of the new republics include much territory not presently controlled by the separatists. if they say no there will be war.

and aye, China and any other revanchist power is watching the situation unfold with great attention. more than a few strongmen around the globe that seek to redraw borders.

You have to admit Putin is a master strategist. This all started years ago when he sent in special ops troops or whatever they call them and posed as, "separatists" to stir up a hornets nest. They start a fake conflict claiming that Russians in Ukraine need to be protected cause is genocide happening. Four years of you-know-who in office and nothing gets done about it and even makes it worse. Now here we are.
