I’m honestly still trying to wrap my head around Putin’s end game here.

The Russian economy suffered the greatest single day loss on their stock market in modern day history, they alienate and antagonize the west into unanimous approval for sanctions by the UN, and their annexation of Crimea failed to be economically viable to maintain a military presence.

Ukraine has 2nd largest european gas reserves and already has a pipeline to the eu.

Germany is heavily dependant on ukranian/russian gas and putins take is they will be forced to buy it ( at obviously inflated prices ), after he takes ukraine.
They also get Kiev and Odessa.

He thinks after they take ukraine the eu will be forced to buy their gas anyway and all sanctions/etc won't affect them enough to negate it.

The west did nothing for chechnya 1/2, georgia ( ossetia ), or crimea that wasn't just talk. so he's at least 4/4 on military action so far.

Russia has spent the last 10 years building their army up - their GDP spent on the army is around 5%, an insane number - unless you plan on using it.

That's the part that confuses me to an extent. You've got Finland and Sweden that are absolutely going to join NATO now, so aside from just land-grabbing Ukraine in order to gain its material assets, the whole "I don't want to NATO on my border" just seems nonsensical.

Then again, I'm not a tyrant, so perhaps I don't have the intellectual capacity of such a genius as Putin.
