That's the part that confuses me to an extent. You've got Finland and Sweden that are absolutely going to join NATO now, so aside from just land-grabbing Ukraine in order to gain its material assets, the whole "I don't want to NATO on my border" just seems nonsensical.

Then again, I'm not a tyrant, so perhaps I don't have the intellectual capacity of such a genius as Putin.

Can't speak for Finland, but Sweden isn't likely to join NATO, it goes against our core concept of being a neutral party that choose diplomacy over war. It's a long, complicated story that there are a lot of reaming materials to read if you want to learn more about exactly why Sweden chooses to not join military alliances and remain neutral, so I won't dive too deep into it here.

It has kind of changed lately in that more people (and even politicians) are talking about wanting to join NATO, but it's still unlikely to happen due to our neutral stance. We can't be neutral if we join NATO, it would potentially force us into a war, and we could be a neutral intermediary then.

Unofficially, Sweden is effectively already a member and would definitely let NATO forces travel through our sovereign territory if it came to a war with NATO, but I'd say the odds of us joining NATO is very low — but not impossible — even after this.

After all, Sweden's advantageous position in the Baltic sea (together with the fact that we've effectively been spying on all Russian phone and internet traffic for the US since the 50's since all internet and phone traffic in and out of Russian passes through Sweden up until 2015) is far too important for NATO to not come to our aid if we were to be attacked.

If this was strictly a ground war? Maybe Ukraine pulls it out. Russia has air and long range strike superiority though. If occupation becomes untenable and they could temporarily pull out and just air strike them into submission. They’d probably damage too much infrastructure though to make it more than a Pyrrhic victory.
