My hypothesis is sending in under-prepared and under trained forces to exhaust whatever resources Ukraine has, throw their old out dated tech at the battle and not care about the loss of life because their military size is so large that whatever is lost is disposable to the military. Once Russia feels that Ukraine is running low on its resources and whatever if being funneled to them from outside aide that they'll start to bring in whatever modernized military might they're holding back with, as well as more infantry.

I seriously doubt that what we're seeing is the actual height of Russia's military might and this is just inventory that has been clogging their depos and they finally have a junkyard to go chuck the shit in and forget about it.

no international coalition is ever going in against Russia, all due respect but you cats are failing basic geopolitics 101. Russia is a power bristling with nuclear arms and that immediately and totally forestalls all direct intervention against them barring a MAD situation. economic pressure will ramp up, SWIFT expulsion should prove devastating, but the United States is not going to war with Russia over Ukraine and if we don't no one will.

but also there is basically no scenario where Russia nukes Ukraine. they would be irreversibly expelled from the international community for minimal gain and Putin is fundamentally a rational actor.

lastly Russia's conventional military capabilities are quite lackluster. they lack access to advanced Western / East Asian tech and their proprietary equipment is inevitably inferior. couple that with a corrupt and low morale force and their offensive capabilities are limited. issue is, of course, Ukraine's military is even worse and much smaller. putting up a good fight but this war is literally a week old. tik tok generation may forget these things usually take years.

I mean really, we're at the part of the fight where Freeza says "oh, this is actually challenging, guess I'll use 50% of my power."
