Ukraine informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today that missiles hit the site of a radioactive waste disposal facility in Kiev overnight but there were no reports of damage to the building or any indications of a radioactive release, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said.

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) told the IAEA that both its communications with the facility – the Kiev branch of the State Specialized Enterprise "Radon" – and the radiation monitoring system at the site had been restored during the morning. SNRIU said it expects to soon receive the results of on-site radioactive monitoring. Staff at the facility were forced to take shelter during the night but could later assess the situation.

The incident came a day after SNRIU said an electrical transformer at a similar disposal facility near the north-eastern city of Kharkiv had been damaged, also without any reports of a radioactive release. Such facilities typically hold disused radioactive sources and other low-level waste from hospitals and industry.

So, if we're scared that Russia will resort to nukes if they are losing in Ukraine, are we really going to give the Ukrainians enough aid to actually push Russia to that point, or just enough to make us look like we did something?

Also, I don't think that cigarette cherry is hot enough to melt through the steel housing of that mine and ignite it. It triggers from a pressure plate, so I'm sure it's pretty well sealed against debris getting inside.

To answer your first question, if there was legitimate concern the tone would be more serious than it is.

I'm response to the second, Russians in general give zero fucks so the Ukrainian holding a cigarette is not the focus it's that he's casually carrying a mine around like "eh whatever is just a mine".

there's some hopium as Ukrainian armed forces remain pitifully weak and the strategic situation remains how do you say very bad but anyone with a proper understanding of Russia's military, manufacturing, and financial resources knows they have next to no capacity to wage an extended campaign and their conventional offensive capabilities are low. this is a country of 140 million people rocking closer to one-third than one-half the GDP of Germany's 80 million. they spend less than non-nuclear India on defense. their military equipment experiences only dismal humiliation when facing Western tech, most recently when NATO-derived Turkish weapons systems annihilated Russian tech in Azerbaijan v Armenia.

they may well still take Kyev and force a favorable peace through weight of numbers but i think it has become apparent the Russian military is largely a paper tiger and if the Ukrainians had been properly armed by the West they could've done this damn thing themselves.
