for anyone with even a passing familiarity with European social issues widespread racist sentiment should not come as a surprise (though as with here the younger generations tend to be much better and broadly speaking progress is being made), and the issue tends to get worse the further east you go. Russia itself is a virulently racist society, and most of its Slavic neighbors are not too much better.
