The point was that our missile defense systems don't reliably hit ICBMs (likely-inflated test numbers put them below 50%), so it doesn't really matter how much faster Putin's superrocket goes.

He's just doing the Russian oligarch's equivalent to buying a mustang.

Using a nuclear weapon against a developed nation is p. much tantamount to ending the world in nuclear holocaust so it doesn't matter how advanced or how many zig zag your nukes do when at the end of the day the person you attack is just going to retaliate with so many nukes that it literally blocks out the sun.

We're way past the point where advancements in nukes matter because we're already past the point of "get hit with a nuke and respond with complete annihilation."

as Beernorth said we scoffed at the notion Putin had developed super secret missiles capable of evading our missile defense systems when their existing missile stockpile already evades our missile defense systems.

moreover this is typical Russo posturing. Russia spends 1/10th what we do on their military and we are expected to believe they are developing hitherto unimaginably sophisticated weapons systems because of an animated video? even when they were the Soviet Union and spending 5 times as much as they presently do we consistently had a qualitative technological edge that they could never hope to match, and their much celebrated hardware be it the Krokodil attack helicopter or the T-80 main battle tank or the MiG-29 fighter always proved fundamentally inferior to both their claims and to their western counterparts.

the truly worrying aspect of their military portfolio, as ever, is their inherited nuclear arsenal. they may well be developing marginally better delivery systems than they previously possessed but when they previously possessed 7000 weapons that could end the world multiple times over and we previously possessed no means with which to counter them in a meaningful way does it truly matter.

right guys (AG, sal, byrth), I understand what functionality a nuclear triad has and my post was not in contention of the idea that russia's 1st strike could come so quickly and undetected that it would destroy all of the US's nuclear capabilities before they could retaliate. but it's just not a "regular missile", it's the only one in its class right now (as far as I can tell googling it, and if this one exists at all), which was your joke, AG. Archi joked about the speed of the ICBM, which is secondary news (to the unmanned nuclear sub and nuclear powered cruise missile), so I'm thinking he may have missed important info as well
Dasva is only one who mentioned regular missile defense systems since the "big news" missile is a cruise missile while everyone else is on about ICBM defense systems but! it's not like an MRBM because it's not a ballistic missile at all. And the nuclear powered part means its range isn't just longer, but it's so much longer that you'd measure it in days of flight rather than distance of kilometers

I don't know, MAYBE my post was pointless since technically you all could have been on the money and I was doing a lot of interpreting of knowledge based on jokes but I assumed there was at least one person mistaking or combining functions of the announced cruise missile and ballistic missiles or not differentiating the difference between a cruise missile and a ballistic missile. Not a big deal in any case

It's worth noting an unmanned vehicle armed with a nuclear weapon is pretty reckless. Especially one that can be left alone autonomously to decide on it's own. Russia's crazy if they actually did that.
