Westworld - HBO - October 2, 2017 - AKA BOSSMODE COWBOY SCIFI SUPER DRAMA

Has anyone read Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom? It's a very short book, but it has similar themes to this show. Man has evolved beyond the need for a body and is able to back up their minds, including memories, in case you were to die.
Had to read it for a college class and finished it in a few hours. Though it's not directly the same, it seems that this show is kind of a lead up to that point; being able to transfer a mind and consciousness to a fabricated body.

Not exactly, since all host minds were fabricated not transferred, similar, but not the same. It remains to be seen if a human mind can be shifted onto the host platform. But the narrative push going forward looks like it's going to be the usual AI vs. Humanity, plus the usual AI existential crisis.
Besides both having a theme park and politicking for control of same, the only thematic similarity between Down & Out and Westworld is the "Hey, people are kinda shitty" message.

The infomorph resleeving is a bit rarer, but you can find it in a few other places. The Takeshi Kovacks series, Stross' Accelerando, & Glasshouse, Eve Online's Dust 514/Templar One & Valkyrie, the Eclipse Phase TTRPG. afaik, Eclipse Phase is really the only one that has Human and AI together, but that's more because it's the transhumanist kitchen sink than anything.

I love how they do this sort of thing on this show. That double take I did when I realized in the pilot that they had a Black Hole Sun cover. I think that was the first one in the pilot, or did they use that later? As much as I do enjoy the way they do covers of songs in this, I also appreciate that it hasn't ever felt to me like they've overdone it. There are a lot of them and I'm sure there'll be a lot more in the second season, but many feel like easter eggs, or are used in montages or end credits, so it doesn't come off feeling like "ok, they're getting too cute for their own good".

Also, Samurai World...

This is great. I figured they would break into or visit another world, and I'm glad that they're going to new places rather than the other options that were in the movies. As great as they made the setting for the first season, I'm excited to see how that looks.

So Lisa Joy and Johnathan Nolan did an AMA on Reddit recently and they talked about how to avoid spoilers and they thought it would be a good idea to just release a video with all of the spoilers with a full plot of Season 2 and just let the internet be the gatekeeper of said spoilers.
