I am not liking this recent Flames trend. Team didn't look like they played their recent style of hockey tonight at all. Played completely into Anaheim's tempo and style. Sure you can argue they have a 3-2-0 record in their last 5, but the wins are against ARI, VAN and COL, and the losses are against SJ and ANA. And before that they lost to CBJ and TBL.
So yeah they have a winning record recently... with wins against teams all half-decent teams should beat. But the losses are against teams they should be at least somewhat competitive against if they're actually a legit playoff contender. But in those last 4 losses they've been outscored 17-6. That's not competitive at all.
I'm back.
Arizona sucks.
The loss wasn't the worrying issue for me, it's the big goal differential that makes me think the Flames are drifting into troubled waters again.
The thing is with the Flames, aside from Gaudreau being a point-per-game (give or take) guy this year, the secondary lines or defense chipping in, just isn't happening as much. (Dougie aside) but Monahan and Bennett slowed down this year, and then Gio/Brodie/Wideman aren't the Gio/Brodie/Wideman everyone has expected. Thankfully Tkachuk has sorta stepped up for you guys, or it'd be a nightmare.
That's not saying Edmonton is perfect at all - far from it. Aside from Connor/Leon, it's been pretty quiet offensively. Maroon has been hot recently, which means McLellan will break up his line thinking he'll spread that offense around, then realize he just botched some chemistry. Every game I find myself thanking the hockey gods for Cam Talbot, especially the games that Gustavsson has been in. LOL
Columbus vs Minnesota Saturday, oh boy
Hope the NHL or NBCSN can flex that into the National TV slot
Islanders waived Halak
Thackuk Backlund and Frolik have been a really pleasant surprise. The latter 2 had great chemistry last season and Thackuk only compliments them. Bennett is matching his numbers from last year almost perfectly lol. And he still doesn't have consistent line mates and is constantly jumping from center to left wing. I think putting him on wing and finding someone to constantly pair him with would help him a lot. Johnny is still Johnny luckily but yeah, Monahan is definitely having a down year. People thought he was playing injured at the start of the season and he did recently have an 11 game point streak or something like that so he's turning it around. Gio and Dougie started off slow and Brodie has been terrible all year (his GF got diagnosed with MS which I think is a big reason why he's off. Dealing with a lot of shit off the ice + plus new on ice style + he's getting forced to play left D when he's only really been successful on the right side). And I cannot wait for this season to end so we can finally dump Wideman. $5mil off the books right there.
Talbot has been solid for you guys. Really impressed after the year he had last season. But yeah, from what little Oilers hockey I've seen this season it really does seem like if McDavid is going, the Oilers are going and if not, well... lol. Leon has been fantastic too. But Eberle and the Nuge seem very inconsistent.
Habs fan slap fight. Love it.
I was like "Hey, Halak would be a decent pick-up instead of Gustavsson as back-u.... oh, a $4.5m back-up goalie? Nope."
