Clearly you didn't see the preds almost-empty-net goal the other day... clearly in control of the situation standing over the puck and practically trying to blow the puck into the net but because he did not touch the puck he was not in control of it. There's no reason the same standards or condition necessary to blow a play dead shouldn't remain the same for both penalties and offsides.

uh, he didn't touch it because it would have been a penalty, not offside, completely different, they would have called intentional offside on him if so, and nobody has to touch the puck for that to be called.. Also, control of puck and "control of situation" are completely different, the Pred was in control of the situation, the Wild player was in control of the puck, he just paused for a moment before touching it a second time.

Let's make offside more complicated and not tell anyone though, that won't piss people off. We already have no clue what GI actually is, so let's fuck up offside.

I'm quite certain making touching the puck trigger a whistle and not touching the puck not trigger a whistle, almost identical to existing delayed penalty rules, is making things less complicated for the average non-hardcore fan. Infact, I'd be okay with simplifying the lone delayed penalty exception (tipping passes and shots but not gaining control) to the same standard to make it easier for new and casual fans
