Yeah, I'm fine with challenging anything/everything, including penalties, provided the number of flags you get per game is 2, and keeping penalties for the last 2 minutes booth-review on penalties that demonstrably impact a play-- PI's an obvious one, but an uncalled illegal contact on the other side of the field isn't; holding needs to be beyond normal 'every play' stuff. That kind of thing. But PI especially needs challengeable-- called and uncalled, and especially catachability. There are so many PI calls where the ball was 8 feet over his head, because the ref is watching the players, and not the ball's location.

I think maybe only Pass Interference should be reviewable, and only because there's really no cap on the penalty yardage for it. The DPI on Sherman would have been a ~50 yard penalty; refs are understandably nervous to make that call at that point in the game. If they call it and they're wrong, they're giving the Falcons a tremendous advantage on what is effectively a hail mary, a low percentage completion play, when it should be over. If they didn't call it and they're wrong, they're ending the game for the Falcons. It's such a no-win. Other than, of course, getting the call right in the first place. Even then, it would have to be 100% obvious, even more so than the current standard. No missed holding or hand checks (like at the start of that play), would have to be as obvious as that play (or the one in the Ravens-Giants game) to overturn it.

I think another compromise might be dropping the penalty to match the college rule - 15 yards and an automatic first down. Refs might be less afraid to make the call at that kind of time, and wouldn't hesitate to make them on a more traditional hail mary, where they're truly loathe to call it.

agreed on both counts. the simple solution is to make it 15 yards like in ncaa, which I think I'd be in favor of
