Was gonna pick up the Uncharted 4 PS4 bundle for $249 at Target then my wife noticed it was also on Cartwheel. An additional 15% ($35) off of the sale price made it a no brainer.

First time in years that I'm either not working on Black Friday or have thanksgiving shit to do with family and I had no desire to go out. I got deadpool and an Amazon echo dot for the wife today while at the mechanic and that'll be it for me. Usually haul in 15 movies or so but didn't see any deals worth the hassle this year

I don't really see anything worth buying this year. A bunch of 4k TVs without HDR = no ty.

I went M11x to Alienware 13, I don't think you'll get a better alternative. It's about the same weight although less battery life. I appreciate the extra screen space, but dislike the no discrete buttons on touch pad (not a big deal if you'll be carrying a mouse though).

What is the deal with hdr? I assume if it doesn't specify it has it then it's no go.
Samsung has a bunch of awesome deals and none of them come with hdr.
The best offer i have seen was 49 in with it for 650. A bit far out of my budget for that.

4K tvs without HDR support likely won't even exist in a year or two. The super cheap ones aren't worth buying at all.

They are just trying to sell them off cheap now to move product off the shelf that won't be replaced.

HDR is what really makes 4k content pop; HDR doesn't require 4k necessarily but TV companies are using it as the selling point. It allows the TV to produce way more colors than a normal TV so things look more vibrant and lifelike. If it sounds familiar, that's because it's a technology that has been in cameras for a while now.

The resolution increase from 1080p to 4k is like going from DVD to Blu Ray but the problem is that most people really can't see the difference unless they're up close to the TV so HDR is what makes 4k TVs more worthwhile.

My wife wasn't sold on it until we watched some underwater 4k HDR video that was on Netflix and it truly felt like we were at a big aquarium.

We ended up getting a 65" Samsung KS8000 on sale; I couldn't rationalize getting an LG OLED for over twice the price and everything looks absolutely stunning on it coming from my nearly decade old 1080p Samsung plasma.

As good as OLED is, it doesn't get as much a boost (percentage-wise) from HDR. Not saying either way is a bad choice, just an interesting note.

Ended up going out late last night to see if anything good was left. Got a 32" Westinghouse for the bedroom for $90 at Best Buy. Couldn't argue with that price point lol

It honestly is the only choice if you are looking into a TV for a long term solution however.

With that said, we went ahead and got the curved 55" OLED that was a couple of hundred bucks off at Best Buy -- they sold out at our location too. Just in time for Final Fantasy XV. The one salesman even kicked down a 7.1 soundbar by about 400$ or so as well just to get rid of it (normal price tag is like 800$). XD Gonna have a stand for the bar built soon, then get some extra speakers for a ghetto "9.1 system" solution too in future.

Next year we gonna make this TV our bedroom TV and spring for a 65" OLED, however. Next year will definitely be a good time for OLED/SUHD.

    Spoiler: show

    ---

I'm actually happy I didn't go for the deals earlier that I was asking for at the beginning of the thread as well -- If you're gonna go 4K/HDR, definitely put in extra and have an OLED as a starting point (or a SUHD). This was personally my first HDTV purchase in about 6 years, so you guys kinda have an idea of where I'm upgrading from (32" 720p upscaled).

Until companies start investing in SMART(pun intended) ways of securing all these smart technologies; I'm staying the hell away from them. When a couple hundred dollar bluetooth hack can defeat an entire smart home; that is a major issue. Hell, it might not even be that much now.

My favorite thing is that smart locks literally broadcast the unlock code and all you need is a sniffer to pick it up and unlock the door. lol

A *STARTING* point? When the 65" LG B6 is literally double the 65" Samsung KS8000; I wouldn't call that a starting point.

The ratings aren't significantly higher for the extra bucks and there are tons of places that agree the insane increase in cost isn't worth it.

OLED is beautiful and is the spiritual successor to the richness of plasma but for most people it's wiser to invest the extra cost into a better AVR and speakers than blowing their whole budget on just the TV; especially when the benefits do not outweigh the cost.

That said; I can't wait to see how the market looks in a few years when other companies start making OLED and they get past the image retention issues and lag.

Other companies won't make OLEDs anymore. Samsung, their biggest competitor, dropped out, because LG has a patent from Kodak that only allows them to make white OLEDs. RGB OLEDs is what Samsung is forced to work with because of that, which simply won't cut it. I'd like an OLED TV, but I don't really like LG.

Samsung is trying to take over QD Vision for their Quantum dot technolgy which Samsung already uses and hopes to make QLED TV's an alternative for OLED TV's. QD Vision also does work for LG, so Samsung could fuck over LG on that front too and perhaps give up that Kodak patent for some QD Vision stuff. Consumer wins, because then 2 companies would make OLED panels with white OLEDs.

The argument ends where I put "SUHD" in parenthesis for the very reason you mentioned. Essentially the point is, if you are looking to invest into a new TV, you shouldn't even be looking into anything less [than OLED/SUHD] unless you are severely lacking in budget or looking into a smaller form factor. In fact, I've already started recommending to a friend to save up more into a SUHD since he's about to set up his dated system as well.

I do agree with you (and Weltall) that it'll be interesting to see where the design methodology will go for rival companies in the future. I still think for a couple of companies (sans Samsung) you're looking at 2+ years before they catch up however.

Black Friday | Cyber Monday 2016

Is the Samsung 65-inch KS8500 CURVED SUHD TV for about 1600 bucks a good deal? I'm illiterate when it comes to television technologies.
