This is a pretty silly way of looking at it. I feel that it implies that the stated stance of candidates is their actual belief and not the status quo on a major issue that could sink or swim a campaign.

Gay rights have come a long way since 2008, as has the discussion around them. Where it was potentially damaging to openly support them then, it was potentially damaging not to in 2016.

This says nothing about Trump's beliefs or character; merely that he didn't hinder his campaign by waxing poetic on traditional marriage (where others did!)

None of this really matters relative to what Trump is actually doing, though, and we can probably move on from Zoner's planet-sized cognitive dissonance because while it's disappointing, it's something of a hallmark for the millenial conservative.
