Regarding Mattis, humorous line from an op-ed questioning if he's the right person for the job.

Many in defense circles have been so overjoyed at the prospect of a qualified secretary, that they seemed to have forgotten to stop and ask if Mattis would, in fact, be right for the job. He is not a politician, or a wonk, or a bureaucrat. To ask him to be any of those things would be like trying to keep a wave upon the sand...

The point is not that Mattis is unqualified. Rather, the point is that he hates this shit.

Fountainhead is probably an easier book to get into (there's not nearly as many characters to keep track of, and the speechifying moments aren't as dense). Then again, saying that is akin to the choice between bathing in hot oil or acid.

(for the record, I've read Fountainhead twice and Atlas ten times, all in the name of being able to thoroughly rebut anyone who tries to spout Objectivist bullshit at me. Now you know where I got the brain damage from)
