Huh, I didn't even know we haven't had diplomatic relations with Taiwan for my entire lifetime.
The Taiwan Wikipedia page is fascinating.

I do enjoy when there's a third option between incompetent and malicious. Given that it's Trump, you've probably already guessed it.
Corrupt.

But he's not a career politician. An outsider. How can he be corrupt?!
Taiwan's DPP does not mind risking hostilities nor would they care about corruption in the US Government (why would they) if it meant they could further their pro-independence platform, much like how Taiwan's KMT will only lightly chastise mainland China's government for human rights violations and whatnot because they wish to preserve the facade of the "Chinese Union", as it were.
Taiwan's a pretty powderkeg IMO and Trump clearly has no fucking idea what he's doing.
So it seems that the Taiwan stuff was their President calling Trump to congratulate him on winning the election, and nothing else.
TAIWAN DOES NOT EXIST IT IS CHINA
I saw a fight break out among the ESL students on campus over this. Teacher shoulda known better than to ask the tw kid where he was from in a room full of the chinas
The President of Taiwan isn't dumb, she did it because she knew it would prompt a response from Mainland China.
It's not necessary for random Americans to understand the convoluted technicalities and contradictions regarding China/HK/Taiwan politics but stuff like this is why having an "outsider" is only something that sounds great if you like functioning on little to no information. Unless Trump is just trying to annoy China on purpose, which I guess is perfectly plausible.
Acknowledging Taiwan exists pisses off China so we don't admit to talking to them ever. The PRC is a firm believer in saying something enough times making it true. It is the crux of vast swathes of their foreign and domestic policy. Fucking with their narrative is either a very clueless or very aggressive foreign policy move. Honestly, I think it's 50/50.
i can't wait for trump to tweet about the armenian genocide and then when people point out how dumb it is for the president to be doing that, a bunch of incredibly thick people on the_donald spam about how leftists are genocide deniers
I think it's equally amazing that people are okay with Trump just doing what the fuck ever because not-establishment.
Not surprised you didn't read the article. The United States is required to provide weapons for Taiwan’s defense under the Taiwan Relations Act, a law from 1979, when Washington shifted diplomatic recognition to Beijing and away from Taipei, but still remained committed to Taiwan’s freedom as well as to unofficial commercial and cultural relations with the island.
You definitely need coffee.
