I might be being purposefully obtuse in rejecting the idea of a democratic wave election that gets them back the house even as history confronts me in the face, but considering the massive enthusiasm gap there is between republicans and democrats, I am not convinced that it's going to happen yet. Republicans LIKE Trump. Trump has his base and they are coming out for him. "Republicans are bad" is a dumb democratic message that excites HIS base.

again, these defeats were and are entirely expected. they are not vacancies from the dead, they are not vacancies from term limits being up, they are vacancies from Trump appointments and those appointments would not have happened had the outcomes been in doubt. all indicators of value heavily favor Democratic chances in the 2018 midterms, though of course those elections are over a year away and much can change. as Archibald said these special elections, which Democrats tend to do worse in, show an average +15 bounce for Democrats relative to the 2016 presidential election, generic Republican vs Democrat polling has Democrats at a +6.8 advantage (Republicans were +1.1 in 2016), and probably most significantly with the exceptions of 1934 (voters eager to give FDR's New Deal a chance if it meant an end to the Great Depression) and 2002 (Dubya riding the 9/11 + Afghan War rally around the flag bump) every single midterm in the last century has seen the president's party lose congressional seats, by an average of 32 in the House.

but if you guys really believe Democrats won't gain House seats in 2018 (Senate map is brutally unfavorable for Dems) i'll gladly bet ya for it, avatars, cash money, dogs. i wager in all legal tender and i'll give you odds.

I don't bet. I also think even a party as abhorrently incompetent as the democrats can make gains in 2018.

Take the house? Probably not. Even if the map wasn't gerrymandered to shit, relying on historical precedent -- midterms are a referendum on the president and the party in power -- relies on the usual trends; and there is nothing indicating right now that the usual trends are worth investing in.

It's still early yet, sure. Donald could really do something that absolutely destroys the nihilist part of his base like gutting net neutrality, in which the only democrat who could fuck up an advantage like that is Hillary. But considering how everyone right now is all "Donald keeps fucking things up" and "his approvals are historically low", the inability to turn that into gains right now should at least give some pause for consideration.

    Or maybe I'm Chicken Little.

You should look at metrics that have been proven to matter historically.

Ex-DNC aide hits back hard at Clinton, says her campaign ignored data on Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin

A top former DNC aide tweeted overnight that Clinton's allegations were “f‑‑‑ing bulls‑‑‑” and even suggested that the Clinton campaign ignored its warnings about how competitive Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin were. Those three states proved decisive for President Trump and, especially in the case of Michigan and Wisconsin, were neglected by the Clinton campaign.
Genuinely fucking hate her more and more with every single revelation that comes to light, and everyone who was so fucking sure she would win.

    All aboard the radicalization train.

“[B]oth groups would be well advised to consider what happened to the Republican Party and the conservative movement in an analogous time, after President Obama was elected. Tea-party rallies were boisterous and often unruly, town meetings of Democratic lawmakers drew protesters and sometimes turned into shout-fests, and conservative-media ratings soared. Many elements of the Obama agenda became enormously unpopular, and the Republican Party took a sharp turn toward the right and away from established party power centers. Obama effectively radicalized the Republican Party and the conservative movement to the point that the tea party took over both the GOP and right-of-center politics. The potential for the Democratic Party and the Left behaving the same way in the opposite direction is very real.”

I can see it now, carving a pumpkin in October will now be considered slandering the president and totally unpatriotic. Happy Halloween, you traitors.

Lol she could have killed five DNC staffers with her own hands and she wouldn't be nearly as bad as Trump.

Why not? Is it wrong to assume Hillary would run a competent campaign, having surrounded herself by the DNC apparatus?

What if I told you this dumb, divisive, responsible-for-her-loss Bernie Bro actually did vote for her in the general election.
