Also the voting rights act pressures districting to create majority-minority districts, which packs Democratic voters together (leaving the non-MMDs whiter and therefore more Republican than a uniform distribution would otherwise be)

When you have ranked voting, voting isn't a zero-sum game. Let's say 5 people are on the ballot, you would rank them 1-5 in order of who you want to win.

If no one gets 50% of the vote through being chosen as #1, the lowest vote-getter is dropped and their numbers are all bumped up one and applied accordingly, and this continues until someone has a majority.

The winners can see which other candidates they got the most votes from and then know to adjust their stances accordingly to include that voting bloc if they have any desire to stay in office after the next election. It also makes it easier for parties to reach the threshold where they can receive public funding and thus be more competitive next time.

Hey man Australians figured it out and they're also an off-shoot of Britain's lowest common denominator.

I wanna disagree with this, but i'm struggling.

Also, while ranked voting is good, i think a more palatable proposal in the current climate would be putting districting in the hands of a non-partisan government agency.

Oakland did this and we somehow wound up with Jean Quan as our Mayor, and that was a complete and total embarrassment. So if you ever try to push that model, look at how Oakland did it and do the exact opposite of it.

Does non-partisan exist anymore? Give districting to a group comprised of a mix of libertarian and green party people?

California's citizen's commission for redistricting works really well.

    lol

Kentucky's 49th State House district just elected a Democrat to the seat in a special election yesterday by 36 points.

The same district voted for Trump by 49 points.

    I'm not making this up.

The 86 point flip in this race is the largest since Trump was elected, by 33 points.

    Spoiler: show
granted she was the old incumbent who lost by less than a point in 2016, and then the man that beat her killed himself under a cloud of sexual assault allegations and the GOP ran his widow in the special election, but still

Assuming it's a rounding issue, DailyKOS tracker shows it as +86.

I would say that a 36 point increase in her margin is actually pretty substantial given that her previous opponent was an unqualified preacher (who ended up being a sexual abuser) and her new opponent was an unqualified preacher's wife (who is, demographically, much less likely to be a sexual abuser).

I worry that a cycle like this is forming:
    1) Democrats are scared, so they show up to single-item special elections and run up the score.
    2) Running up the score creates a narrative about a blue wave, so Democrats get less scared.
    3) Fall elections hit and there is more normal Republican turnout + newfound Democrat complacency.
    4) Republicans draw the next set of district maps too.

Not to mention democrats failing at pushing policies like punishing Equifax for their leak and just demanding a 2 year extension to their identity thief monitoring program.

So as it turns out part of influential Clinton/Hashtag Resistance/brain parasite twitter is actually a serial sexual harasser

Another one of those names I never heard until after the election and was somehow all over twitter.

“The real question to be asked is what was the Clinton campaign [doing about Russian interference]? They had more information about this than we did,” Sanders said in the interview with Vermont Public Radio.
I mean, he's not wrong lol.

Everyone loves going on about how Hillary won the primary and was the dem candidate, and yet nobody can make her responsible for anything.
